Title: NPD - EHX Dual Muff
Post by: gwEm on January 10, 2017, 09:50:46 AM
I didn't have high expectations for this pedal, but actually I rather like it.

Its two slightly fuzzy sounding overdrives in one affordable box. The sound of the overdrives is a little dark, but in a cool sounding way, not a muddy sounding way.

When one of the the overdrives is enabled it sounds more or less like a normal overdrive pedal - great rock sound into a Marshall.

When you kick in both overdrives it becomes more like a fuzz. The two controls are interactive and you can get a few sounds out of it.

So I've been using it with a wah. Single overdrive mode normally, switching to double when I use the wah to get more of a psychadelic tone.

The nice thing is that when you roll back your guitar volume the sound cleans up *really* well and gets a bit brighter - similar to a fuzz face.

The only Muff-like pedal I have is the Fuzz War by Death By Audio. It's a super intense fuzz!

That Death By Audio does look good! I wanted to try one for ages

the early timeline effects with "Muff" in the name went:

Muff Fuzz - now more accurately called the Muff Overdrive, some people think this was a Fuzz Face rip off
Double Muff - two of the above in the same box
Big Muff - you could say the first version was like three Muff Fuzzs in a box with mods and a tone circuit took the idea of cascaded gain stages from the double muff and extended it further

I would say the first two on this list are more like a Fuzz Face really. But the Muff Fuzz/Overdrive isn't really a fuzz in the sense of a Big Muff or a Fuzz Face, more like an overdrive with a fuzzy nature to it.

I do wonder about the quality of Electro Harmonix pedals. They feel flimsy to me and don't use the best components. The thing is though, they have unique designs, and I do get inspired when I use them. Maybe the build quality was better in the "good old days"

Yeah, I have no idea what the life expectancy is on an EHX pedal. I only own one, the Mel9, so I cannot comment on it!
