Didn't they mostly all use stock Gibsons and Fenders? So... Mule, or Black Dog if you want hotter? I'm no expert, but seems like the way to go?

I'm not too sure about that - tried a Crawler in my Showmaster superstrat and it wasn't exactly what I'd call "grunge" - far too thick in the mids and not enough bite in the higher frequencies. Could possibly try a VH2 or even an A-Bomb?

On second thoughts this pickup and the VHII seem like good options.  I guess I was mainly thinking of Soundgarden
