Title: Tell me about Riff Raffs
Post by: darkandrew on March 12, 2017, 01:43:05 PM
I've tried almost all the non-ceramic Bare Knuckle "Rock" pickups from Mules to A-Bombs but have never tried the Riff Raff. I imagine they are like Mules with a bit more bite - is this right? So, if you could please tell me all about Riff Raffs, that would be great. For reference I have used Mules, VH2s, Rebel Yells, Crawlers nd Alnico Nailbombs, so any comparisons with these would be particularly useful.

From what I have read the two closest pickups to the RR seem to be the Stormy Monday and the Emerald.

The RiffRaffs are more or less a Mule with an A5 magnet.

Fair to say that out of the pickups already used that the RR is between a Mule and a Rebel Yell (at least the bridge pickup)?

Thanks - yes it's the bridge that I'm most interested in; the neck gets very little use by comparison and is really just a "bonus". The dc resistance figures suggest that the RR is quite a low output pickup - is it significantly lower than the RY?

the riff raff is somewhat similar to both vh2 and mule, but it's middier, brighter and a little more articulate than both, less smooth than the mule, smoother and less bassy than the vh2
probably the most versatile bridge model

It certainly seems to be quite versatile. I'm in the situation of possibly having one of my ESP Eclipses without pickups following a bit of a reshuffle and I'm torn between getting another Rebel Yell set (I already have one in a different guitar) or a Riff Raff set for 80's style pop rock in this guitar but I'm concerned that the Riff Raffs might be too low in output when compared with Rebel Yells, Nailbombs and Crawlers in my other guitars.

nothing any level/output control in any overdrive/distortion/equalizer/compressor won't even out
it's not even that low output, just uncompressed
