Title: Active to passive?
Post by: OD-Black_Fire on April 08, 2006, 05:29:53 PM
If I were to buy a guitar with two EMG 81s and change them to BKP's, will I have to do any more wiring than if I buy a guitar with two passive pickups and change them to BKP's?

As far as I know, the pickups themselves are active, so I don't think there'd be a problem. But there again, I don't know anything about EMG's...

If your guitar had a pre-amp installed, like an active bass for example, then you might have a bit more of a problem.

I think...  :?

I read somewhere that EMGs use 25k pots, so youd have to replace them with 500k..

Yeah, Toms right, you would have to change the pots. I'd suggest getting a guitar with passive pups.

Confirmed, I have a LP Special with EMG P60/81, and the pots are 25K. Best you get Potis, Capacitors and wire from Tim when ordering the pickups and wire them according to www.guitarelectronics.com schemes.

Be careful, as you'll get logarithmic ones and the schemes on guitarelectronics are for linear ones. Just swap the middle and the left pin wires and you'll be fine (check the BKP wiring scheme for reference). Just tell you that because I made the mistake in the first place ...
