ok so i went to sound control and tried:
tonelab
GT-8
Pod xt live
all through headphones this time to get an idea of their full modelling capabilities- not through an amp.
firstly, the tonelab....
peoples recommendations of the tonelab for crunchy lower-gain settings were immediately apparent... nice stuff... pretty good but the higher gain settings were limited and not great.... im not saying they were cr@p though cause they definately werent... just lacked that 'something'...
cleans were good as you may expect although the operation (although meant to be really simple) was actually a bit awekward- buttons were flashing not staying on/off and the channel (clean/distortion) kept changing when i didnt want it to....
also, i managed to knock one of the 'chicken-head' style knobs off within about 30 seconds of using the machine....
next the POD..... sounds were much more full.... operation= super easy because there are no channels like the vox (and boss actually) there are just patches which are either clean/distortion so theres no confusion with switchin or selecting a certain amp type with knobs or dials.... you just use your feet to select everything which is cool...
distortion sounds (particularly higher gain) were better... more realistic, although the vox's crunch was still more valve-like and than the POD's and probably won on that point.... cleans were good and were never too harsh or muddy... everything crisp and clear for the most part...
that may have been a bit one sided but i didnt give the vox as much of a try as i would have liked.... maybe because i just wasnt into it that much i dunno... i may give it another test soon...
so i dont think theres as much of a tone difference in terms of quality, as i may have made out above...
next- GT-8.... at first.... sounds a bit muddy... but a fair bit fuller than the POD- fatter.... some sounds were harsh and some unclear... so began to tweak the EQ and amp models a little.... this made MASSIVE differences and things were improved easily... within a couple of mins of playing with an effect i got a nice metalish tone... just with my basic knowledge that metal requires less mids and more treble... so someone with more mixing skill could do a lot better.... cleans were nice too.... i think in general the POD's sounds were actually more 'life-like' than the GT-8's but the difference is the tweaking..... there really is a HUGE difference....
like i said, the editing on the boss changed things A LOT whereas even drastic EQ adjustments on the POD didnt do a great deal.....
this is where the dilemna is- get the boss hoping that with its editing capabilities ill be able to get LOADS of great sounds.... or go with the POD and hope that its relatively few (i know theres a lot but compared to the GT-8 its nothing) sounds will keep me satisfied....
at the moment my hearts with the POD but im gonna give them another test....
dont really know why i posted this lol

couldnt you have found a stray dog, took him in, nurtured him with doggy biscuits, and done a dance of joy?
i know i would if i had a degree in astrophysics.

Did the Pod have all the addon model packs installed for you to try?
There's some really cool extras in those:

Well, there's several packs, and depending on what style you play some may be more useful than others.

-
yer they look pretty cool! how much for the three pack

I like it, but I must admit I haven't used it extensively yet. I got it mainly so I can play/record with some decent sounds when my little boy's asleep and the stack on full blast might not go down very well. ;)

$50 is good i spose if it makes that much of an impact....
lol muttley.... kool...
how much did all three cost? how do you put em on the POD? by computer? are they more expensive in the UK?
-
Sam
could only find US price on their site. Even starting with UK it takes you to US for price. It is a pc download it seems.
All three modules qouted as http://uk.line6.com/modelPacks/podxtlive.html

Well, it's not a download as such. All of the models and stuff are built into the POD already, you just get a license key which, in conjunction with a USB cable hooking the POD to your PC, and the Line6 Monkey software (you get it with the POD), it authenticates and unlocks the addons.
You can only buy them on the Line6 site, so the price is the same no matter where you are. At the current exchange rate it'd work out at about £58 for the 3-addon deal.
There's samples up on the Line6 site.
Muttley
-
ah cool thanks guys....
£58 isnt bad...
but i think the third one (FX update) is included in all the XT Live's now..... at least thats what i think i remember seeing somewhere....
but yer £58 is pretty good on the whole
EDIT: nick- just looked at a musicians friend price.... NO *&^^ing WAY!??!?!!!!!!!!
$400!!!!!
that works out at £222..... thats at LEAST 80 quid cheaper... and by soundcontrols price thats OVER £100 CHEAPER...
DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN
-
omg i don't believe they charge you for "unlocking" them. i'd just find a key generator :P on th'interweb
-
lol i doubt its as simple as that
-

That'd be hard (as well as illegal of course). You need to unlock it via an account you setup with Line6 when you buy them.
It's hardly a big deal TBH. I mean, £58 is just one average night out after all. ;)
Muttley
-
lol!.... i wish my average night out was 58 quid.... haha
yeah but it isnt that big a deal.... if they;re good then the price isnt that important
-
I have all the packs on my Guitarport (and the XT pack) - they are not that bad - in all I would say the Metal one is the least useful because the modelling between say the Line 6 insane and the Soldano on the POD and the Diezel and the Engl on the Metal pack doesn't really sound that different (to my folkie ears at least). The Classic amps has some great sounds on it and the FX pack (which is included in XT Live) has some crazy stuff on it too.

i put badgermark as my name cos my name is mark, and the badger bit was something my friends added before my name, as there is 2 marks in our social group. though im getting sick of it, its better than nothing i suppose.
oh ooooh oh! faa faa faa fa faa faa fa faaaaaa
-
ROFLMFAO
-
i only said it cos there is so many topics, and they are all about the same thing. so stop being a little ####!!flap.
HAHAHA! PWNT sambo!
-
theres only like 2 threads on the topic of multi-fx... but theyre not a direct comparison of the two units....
do i need to spell it out even more?
and does it really bother you that much?
P.S- get over it? get over yourself mate- its not like i actually give a shite about the nickname your boyfriends give you....
why badger anyway? do you live in a hole and smell like shite or something?
-
Dont get offensive. These forums are nice :)
-
why badger anyway? do you live in a hole and smell like shitee or something?
HAHAHAHA.
Seriously though, Line6 are extortionate, ive got the Rifftracker, i thought i was entitled to the packs for free!
How wrong i was...
-
they are a bit extortionate lol.... at least the XT live's come with the FX pack included....
-
wow, people are starting to get touchy... :o
anyway, my two cents is (i've said it before and i'll say it again) that you have to try out everything (or at least as much as possible) in the one place, head to head, with the same guitar.
Unless something totally sucks so much that it's blatantly obvious, (with me at least) if something is even half-decent, i'll think it's better than it is, unless i get to compare it to something better.
even if an engl, or a laney, or whatever is out of your price range (if the guys in the shop will let you) try them out too, to see if they're worth saving up for, over the line 6, or whatever else you're looking at...
-
cool thanks for the advice dave mate
-
^ no problem, man, any time.
:D
-
laalaalaa KITTENS!
-
ahh well seein as im already soooooooooo offended by you calling me an immature douchbag... ive kinda got nothing to lose...
so NER NER NER NER NER (you love penis)
-

Cheers!

It's not just you. That's a good point, actually.
-
yer A/B comparison is the only way to really tell the difference...
but from clips ive heard... and from personal use of 'em.. i think the POD and BOSS are just different rather than better/worse...
like i said though i think i wanna try the vox more though...
if it helps anyone at all basically my point is.... with the POD XT live and GT-8, its really personal preference... they are so similar that its really just which one does it more for a person...
ive scoured the web for reviews+comparisons e.t.c. which all have different conclusion- some people love gt-8 and hate pod, some people love pod and hate gt-8.......
this is basically telling most people what they already know... but yer know.... BASICALLY.... i dont think theres any particular feature that stands out from either of the units.... and if you a read comparison or review with loads of hype in favour of a particular unit (GT-8 or POD XT live) that has loads of technical reasons for one being better than the other.... its all bollocks..... they are so similar (in sound and features) that you just have to try em and you will know pretty much instantly which one you want....
hope that helps someone in some way lol....
-
Boss GT-8 RULES
If you stopped playing with wild animals in the woods which you arrived at by stowing away on a train whilst writing poison pen letters to someone called Coda you would already know this LOL!
Patience young jedi.
Don't let your frustrations boil over. Take it out on the quest to discover the multi effect you seek. There is surely no hurry Sam. As frustrating as it must be (I can remember back that far), not having a car or a job (more means to purchase without remorse) etc., it WILL all come good and you NEED to heed Master Yoda Dave's advice and test test test. Then and only then will enlightnment come and bring with it contentment and PEACE :D

^^LOL!
but what is it exactly that you prefer about the boss?????????
just tweakability?

I doubt i'm master yoda though- hayden/to/phil king or one of those guys are the jedi masters- i'm kind of like obi wan on his first day after graduation from jedi school,
