I currently have a set of mule's. They sound great except I find them too bright and lacking a tad of power/low end depth control. I usually roll my tone down 1/4 way to sound less shrill and more controlled. I'm looking for ultimate versatility; open, slight compression, crunchy, textured, dynamic, balanced, moderately forgiving. My guitar is tuned to standard/drop D. I used to have a LP studio with holydivers and I loved the sound of that guitar so I'm wondering if I should try out the HD again. I also have a Coldsweat bridge that I tried in this guitar - sounded good but too 'precise' , although I loved the crunchiness and articulation. Alnico V is my ideal feel/sound. I play classic rock, modern rock, jazz, blues, progressive, extreme metal sometimes ; (Opeth, Foo fighters, Tom Petty, Kings of Leon, Dillinger Escape Plan, Karnivool, Big Wreck, Queens of the Stone Age).

Really liking the Abraxas set I put in a few weeks back. They really bring the CU24 to life and tame the shrillness. Detailed review here:

your description sounds like an abraxas indeed, but I'm not sure it will tame enough brightness
holy diver should be fine, but won't sound like a les paul
perhaps the crawler could work well for you

The Crawler performs well in PRS guitars. It can cover a lot of styles, but is not a very modern sounding pickup. And the bass might be a little soft for extreme metal.
