Title: Covers, or no?
Post by: downrodeo on April 09, 2006, 01:52:23 AM
I was thinking of getting a set of covered pickups but are there any ill effects on the tone, i.e. less bite, less presence, a touch more muddy on low end???
Would it be worth the extra money to have badass covers on a set of nailbombs, pigs or MMs? They look great, cost more, and if they sound just as good I'll definitley give covers a thought...Thanks, guys.

The winds are adjusted for the cover, so you don't have any ill effects. 2 of my 3 humbucking BKs have covers on em ... they are cool! (My uncovered one is a reverse zebra, tho)

No ill effects, same tight bass and cutting treble?! That sounds great. I hope you're right man. Gives me the warm fuzzies just thinking about how great a set of camo or distressed gold NBs will look...mmm.

the honest reply is yes covers do effect tone, the round the highs and lows a touch.........however we use handmade pure nickel silver covers which are way more transparent than the plated brass used by the majority of other makers.............as TO says I tweak the wind too where needed.

If I play metal and I order covered  will I be left wishing I had ordered open-poled humbuckers which are supposedly more responsive?

I think your sound depends so much more on the pickup model you choose, and not whether they're covered or not. If I understand Tim correctly, there would be only a small difference (which may be even smaller because they adjust the winds - see http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10, too) in sound between covered and non-covered pickups - maybe it wouldn't even be audible to you without comparing them side by side.

I bet you wouldn't hear any difference. I'd get a covered one -- gold looks cooler than plastic, and the cover also provides protection against sweat, scratches etc.

Simply put and well said. I got some covered Nailbombs which I'm sure will sound great. And I think TO would know...
