Title: Neck for HSS/HSH
Post by: Saito on September 08, 2017, 08:18:34 AM
I'll get straight to the point.
I'm getting an Emerald for the bridge and a PAT 63 for the middle (I've used both pickups before). Just unsure what to use for the neck. Humbucker or single?

It's a super strat style guitar.
For humbuckers I'm torn between the Emerald or VHII in the neck. As for a HSS set up I can't decide on another PAT 63 or an Irish tour.

Middle pickup is only used for splitting with the others. Neck is mainly used for soloing.

The IT-neck can handle quite some gain, but beware, it's still a vintage pickup. It can do Hendrix, SRV etc, but heavier styles is not is forte.
If you want versality put the humbuckersized Nantucket/ Mississippi Queen in there. And otherwise I like the Mule-neck very much, but that's my taste.

the neck strat coil is one of the best in rock. I would definitely go HSS.

Emerald + trilogies would be quite a nice combo i think.

Just to know: Emerald in a strat can be a bit on the bright side.

Thanks for the replies. I have stuff to look into now.

As for Emerald being too bright for a strat. I not one for generalizing how wood and construction methods sound. Especially after playing strats made out of the same wood but all having different acoustic tonal properties.
Some sound bright, some dull, some loud, some quiet. I make my decisions based on the acoustic properties of a guitar and the tone I'm after.

Anyways, single coils are inherently bright especially the late 60's models. Even brighter than an Emerald. Would you say they are also too bright for a strat?

Just pick your choice mate, any humbucker will do. Period.
