I was testing out my newest amp purchase today (at HIGH volume), my mate had his EMG81-loaded LP custom, I had my WP-loaded LP standard.
We were both surprised to find that the WP had noticeably more gain and sizzle than the EMGs. As if any more proof were required as to 'how' beastly the WP is then here it is
oh, btw - the Randall Titan is my newest amp purchase and it's silly loud, has that crushing low end I was looking for and the sweepable midrange lets you 'zone in' the midrange. I'm gonna play with my rack eq in the effects loop to tune it in 100%.
I'm using my own homebrew mosfet booster pedal in the front end for an extra kick too (heh)

ha i don't believe you got the Titan in the end. I'm proud of yu for going with what yu thought no matter what we all said. Yu don't seem too disappointed either...
-
do you think you will be able to post the comparison soundclips between the 2 Lp loaded with WP and emg 81?
if yes, i´ll bloody thank you for the effort.
$%gin hails
5150 clips are on it´s way
ahahahahahahaah

how much did you get it for????????
-
i´ll have a lack of aftermaket pickups , so, ahahahah i will not have an emg 81 /warpig for comparison SOON, but i´ll plan to have both(LATER), and i´ll do comparison clips too

Hey, where did my post go where I said that I found the opposite?
I found the opposite, btw.
To elaborate: the pig sounds much heavier and far bigger and louder, but not more gain or high end. Thats the same through a screamer, TSL and cube 30.
-
I had the pleasure to A/B the EMG81 and the Warpig. I still find the EMG a good pickup for what it's meant to do. The Warpig was better clean and with distortion it is simply way more brutal than the EMG. I sold the EMG loaded guitar, 'nuff said.
-
Yeah, I replaced the 81 with the pig with tremendous success. But I got more guitars since then and the 81 found its way back in. In a particularly dark mahogany guitar, and it sounds great. The pigs still better, but it has its uses, and I like it.

+1 on the clips!! Sounds like a great amp!
-
I can't really do a comparison since the EMG81s are in my mate's LEFTHANDED LP Custom. I can say that we both noticed that the WP had more gain than the 81 and also sounded more 'alive'.
I could do some clips of the Titan with the WP, not sure how great it will sound at low volume but I'll give it a gp - keep an eye out for some new clips.
As for the amp, yeah I couldn't give two $%s what anyone else says - I trust my own ears (I paid £300 for it). The amp (like many) doesn't really give you the goods at bedroom volume, once you get upto rehearsal volumes though - WOAH!!!
I'm gonna need to upgrade the two G12Ms in my 4x12 though, this amp will blow those speakers soon as look at 'em

That's the spirit!! Ears over hype anyday!
-
woah, how the hell did you get it for £300?! Thats mega cheap!
-
My mate (other guitarist in my band) got it off ebay for £370 - he was curious about Randalls.
We took it to a rehearsal room last Sunday to give it some volume and I liked it (alot). He offered to sell it for £300 (he prefers the JCM800 2204 I modded for him).
I'm 95% happy with the tone, I'm just playing with EQs in the loop to truely tune it in - same with OD pedals, got a few to try out in the front end just to juice it up a little more (heh).
Oh, I've ordered an ISP Decimator too based on the overwhelming thumbs up it seems to get from everyone.

How does the WP and EMG 81 compare for harmonics and the likes as well as top end?
thanks
MMM
-
the WP has better harmonics (imo) than the 81 and a more natural midrange.
-
Which one has more highs? and how about the organicism of the highs quality"?!
Ah, is the warpig clearer, articulated than the EMG 81?
-
Thats what i said....
ask your friend to come to your house, and then you record you playing the clip, and record Him playing the clip
but of course, i think this is ASK to much aahahahahahaha
Sorry, but it´s a good idea.

my (band)mate lives an hour away so we don't really get to hang out much outside of rehearsals - I'd love to help you but it's not really practical. When we get something recorded in the studio I'll post some clips.
(update) we practiced today and I'm still loving this Randall Titan amp - it's a total beast!!!
-
just get the warpig already JP! :)
-
OK MAN, Thank´s
i understand
:P

EMG 81's give more powerful harmonics and high end, they are lead pickups you know. Warpigs aren't. EMG's are a bit tighter too, and have more screech, but the Warpigs have a much bigger deeper sound, making it sound more brutal. The EMG 81 cut right through the Warpigs but they are for two different purposes. This is all my opinion.
My ideal set up would be to have two guitars for drop D and two for drop C, one of each has EMG'S and the other has warpigs. The ones with EMG's also get tremolos, and the ones with warpigs have hardtail bridges. Ownage.
-
I wouldn't exactly agree with the last post but I will say that EMG81s are more focussed as they have huge midrange punch and not nearly as much bass as the Warpig. As for high end and harmonics, I think the WP has just the right amount of each and a much more organic tone overall.
I think the Miracle Man is a truer side-by-side comparison with the 81.
-
I wouldnt (and dont) pigeon hole either pickup into lead or rhythm: both can do a great job of both, and bring different qualities to it. But I would agree generally with Black Fire.
AND the 81s have more mids.
As general tonal character goes the MM is a better comparison, but has noticable amount less gain: where I can A/B my pig and 81 within seconds, I hear the 81 have a shade more gain; if I left it 5 minutes, they'd seem the same, whereas a miracle man just has less, end of: you can tell all the time.
And seeing as I love my gain, I just sent my double screw pole miracle man in to be rewound to warpig level  (or higher if the existing tone isnt compromised: I left that to Tims judgement).
Should be a MONSTER! Cant wait to play the beast :D
