Title: So how much effect do polepieces really have on a pickup?

Title is the main question. I bought a set of Ragnaroks with bolts instead of screw heads to (from what I can tell) ease up slightly on the bass response, but how true is this really?

Also, I'll report back on the Ragnaroks once I get them - they're going into what essentially amounts to a Les Paul, so if they work in there, they'll work in damn near anything.
