Title: New PU's for a Flying V?
Post by: mortenoppenheim on April 30, 2018, 09:24:10 AM
Hi guys. I want to change the stock Burstbucker pro's in my Flying V 120, to a set of BKP's. I am considering the Warpigs or the Painkillers. Both ceramic. Soundwise, I am going for old-shool deathmetal, and perhaps a little Slipknot chugging. Think Boss HM-2. What's your opinions? And are there any difference, soundwise, to the PU's being covered or uncovered?

You'll have a hard time picking the difference through a HM-2!

Hehe, good point. I won't be using the Hm-2 exclusively. Just for the occational swedish deathmetal fix. For the other stuff, I will be playing through a Randall Thrasher or a Katana Head. Cab is a Randall RG412.

I still think the difference between covered and uncovered is pretty minimal.  Uncovered will be slightly brighter if there is any difference at all.  With the 120th model being a pickguard mount I would probably stick with covers.  All mahogany, set neck probably I would go for the Painkillers, Miracle Man, or Ragnarok.

Warpigs can sometimes be a bit too dark, certainly in Explorers, not sure about Vs.

Yearh, Tim also recommended the Painkillers. Ceramic that is. But I'm a bit worried, that They will be to bright/harsh? BTW, should I choose long or short leg versions, for pickguard-mounting? I don't plan to coil-split, but should I go for the 4-conducters anyway?

Your guitar is (I assume) a big old lump of mahogany so I would imagine the Painkillers would take quite nicely to it. You may as well go 4-conductor just in case you want to try any wiring mods later on; better to have it and not need it, rather than want it and have to rewire them/order new pickups.

Actually, I took the dive and went for a set of C-Pigs. The 120 V is not that big of a lump, compared to other V's. Thin C neck and not that dark sounding, I've got an Epi Brent Hinds too and that's one massive slab of wood!!
