ok... every guitar shop i go to.... (which is three so far lol) the staff have been like...
"woah dude... coool guitar... is that a bare knuckle!??! NICE! what is this anyway?"
and im like
"melody maker re-issue dude"
and theyre like
"woahhhhh totally awesome dude"
ok excuse the bill and ted-ing towards the end... but yeah thats how it goes...
have i missed something about my axe? i bought it second hand at Coda for £350 never having heard of one before.... now it seems a lot of people who see it are interested in it.... is it quite rare? obviously not rare as in like ... "OMG THAT '72 '68 '57 ORIGINAL LP JEEBUS CHRIST!" but rare as in not overly common?
what dya think i could sell it for? what are retail prices people have seen? i havent seen a common retail price anyway.... its varied from £400-£600 which is a BIG variation on retailers price...
dunno where im going with this but it seems like i went to sleep and woke up in a world where melody makers are unheard of and really cool
any info/opinions whatever much appreciated....
P.S have definately noticed that having a BK gives me instant respect in most guitar shops 8) i get people in sound control being REALLY HELPFUL and not trying to just sell the most expensive thing they can to me.... awesome bonus for a great pickup!
-
melody makers are quite unusual gibsons, not alot of people have them.
Ive never seen on in real life before and ive been in all the shops in my city (4) and some in near by places and you only get LP's the odd flying V and xplorer and sone time a Firebird... that was sweet... anyways as for how much it could go for i ebayed it and some are on buy it now for 499 to 699 so you could make quite a profit on that.. with the BK installed who knows how much more you can get for it...
ive noticed that as well, in my local shop the guys who are usually quite moany gave me alot of respect when i came in to have my BK installed. they said
shop guys " where'd you get that pickup from"
Me - "ahh off the net, took a while to decide what to get ya know?"
shop guys-"ah well it sounds awsome in it, and ive not seen an LP in blue before, sets the guitar off nicely"
-
cool thanks man...
yeah lol... having something like a BK really does change the way shop guys act towards you... helps a lot...
and yeah, LP in blue look pretty damn fine btw!!!!
anyone else seen any prices for them in guitar shops? ive never seen one in a shop- just online...
and yeah, with the bareknuckle installed... lemme think
£350 for guitar
£90 for pup
=
£440
i could break even if not make a profit from that.... not bad....
-
^ i saw one in a local shop yesterday, I think they were asking something daft like £700 for it (it's a dear shop though, and the kind that gives you like 10% off just by having the sense to ask...)
-

Why would you sell it with the BK in?!? Save it for another guitar!! I am definately not selling any of my guitars with BK's left in them!
-
haha no i dont think ill sell it...
just wondering what my options were... and really just trying to find out its real value...
yer dave- £700 is a pretty crazy price... but not that far off what a lot of online shop are asking for it- a lot, if not most, onlin shops aer £550- £600
weirdd
-
^yeah, they used to be about £500...
and marshalls have gone up in price too...
-
two words for you sambo my boy- green day.
since the person from that band switched to one pick-up melody makers seems like they are everywhere. so now they are a bit popular with the pop punkers so the shops can ramp up the price (and their profit...)
-
^oh yeahhh!!!!
didnt think of that one!!! hmmm interesting.....
-
That Billy Joe Armstrong's done a lot for the one P-90 Gibson guitars, but I've noticed them more in general in music videos, along with 'buckered teles.
-
yer id agree with you on that phil.... its turning out to be a worthy investment... only thing is... if i DID sell it.... id have to find a guy looking for a proper 'players' guitar... as its definately not a looker in the traditional sense...
i mean, putting on this on ebay could be a big mistake... as most people will take one look at the poor, wearing finish, and the battered pickup case e.t.c and not appreciate it at alll
well thats me theory anyway....
-
I have a mate who has one- made in the 1950's.Thye were considered budget in the oearly days- a student guitar I believe.

I've noticed that almost EVERY guitarist in an indie/shite band plays a tele.. that being said I still want a tele because Jimmy Page got awesome tone from them :D
-
Tele's are wonderful Tom.They can be a bit unforgiving though. You can get great tone from them-especially if you get them BK'd.
-
Mmmmm.... Teles......

don't act all cool on us and pretend you don't know he's called billie joe, lol.
doesn't he use a les paul junior, though?
but yeah, they look enough alike that noobs will think it's the same thing, and hence the price will go up.
Man, I hate people.
-
haha! yer true...
and yeah i think it is a junior but like you said not many people will know the difference or care...
-
Lots of differences Sambo!
The LP Junior has a thicker body, wrap around bridge and comes in 2 flavours (Single and Double cutaway). The different colours also had different model names (TV for the limed mahogany finish), and the 2 pickup versions are called specials.
The original Melody Makers had single coil pickups which looked a bit like EMG's - black with no poles. The were single cut, but with about 25% less body depth than a junior. All the controls were on the pickguard, and they came in 1 and 2 pickup versions. They had a wrap around too. The double cutaway came later, but looked much the same other than some of them got a maestro tremelo. The final incarnation had them looking like SG's with still the same single coil pickups apart from the one pickup version, which got a P-90, just like the SG junior. The easy way to tell Melody Makers is to look at the headstock. They have a narrower, parallel sided headstock through all the years. The picture is an original single pickup, single cutaway.
Your guitar looks like the LP Junior, but with a stop tailpiece and tune-o-matic bridge, but still the narrow headstock. Musiciansfriend are selling them for $529 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Electric?sku=517842
and they sell the junior for $649 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Guitar/Electric?sku=517341
-
 lol guess your right... people probably would tell the difference lol.... but all it takes is a dodgy sound control guy to say "oh yeah this is like the guitar Billy Joe(l?) uses" and the punters are brainwashed (not if they know anything about guitars of course..)
thanks for all the info!!!! so in terms of sound and build quality and everything in general... is there anything "better" about the juniors? or are they just 'different' to the melody makers? also have you tried an original and re-issue melody maker? how do they compare?
so basically i think i got my melody maker (used) for what the retail price is in the US.... not bad.....
thanks again phil

I tried one of the new Juniors and thought that it was a really good guitar with a nice neck. I haven't played one of the new Melody Makers. but I have played lots of the old ones (Epiphone have a simialr guitar in the Olympic, just the shape is different). I had one of the SG Junior style ones, but sold it to a friend years ago (he still has it). I sold it becuase I got a white SG Junior.
Having the tune-o-matic makes the intonation better, but you lose a bit of sustain. So depending what you want to play either will suit.
-
cool thanks phil.

Hey I used to like Green Day back in the, umm, day. Dookie still is a great album.
I thought it was the junior, but to a layman (like me...) who doesnt know much of a difference they are mostly the same shape with one fat pickup.
I'd love to get a SG junior though, I only use a bridge pickup and never tried a p90 before. One day maybe...
-
^yeah, i haven't got to try any p90's either.
Needless to say, I'm GASsing after some.
-
they really are AWESOME.... so much bite.... then you have the nice single-coil jangliness.... of course the only thing lacking (in my opinion) is brute force/output.... but i dont need that anyway... so their perfect for me...
-
^ i know, i've heard great things, lol...
