Title: Thinking of putting Emeralds in my PRS Custom 24
Post by: ChocoFudgeCake on June 29, 2018, 11:28:05 AM
Hi,

Just curious if anyone has done this. I absolutely love the build and play-ability of my CU24, but tone wise, I find it a little dark or muffled. It has 85/15 which I know are good, but I really am a strat guy when it comes to tone. I often put a strat impulse response on m Helix when playing with teh CU24.

I do actually own a strat, it has a set of Kinman Woodstock Plus pickups (link (https://kinman.com/model-products.php?pid=4&products=Stratocaster&linegroup=yes&modelid=25&model=Woodstock+Plus&group=Named%20Sets)) in it, and that's the territory I'd really like to approach with a new set of pickups for the PRS.

With that in mind, can anyone advise or share an opinion on the emeralds for a CU24?

The Emeralds will not get you anywhere near Stratty.

The bridge is very PAF like in character, just a bit brighter and barkier, with a lot of fatness. In some guitars it might have the harshness of a spikey Strat bridge pickup, but that's the only similarity I can think of. The neck is FAT FAT FAT, thick, rich and a little compressed. Way too much in the mid range for the scooped/woody Strat neck tone. The splits aren't very Stratty either.

I would suggest you look more at the Mule or the VHII. The Mule is very balanced and open, but still has balls when you need it to. Coil-splits are more Tele-like but there is that spankiness there. I haven't played the VHII but by all accounts it pairs well with Strat pickups and splits excellently, and like the Mule has a very uneven wind so it's very open and clear. The blurb on the site even mentions that it deals well with rotary switching, which to me reads like a veiled way of saying they'll get on well in PRSes.

I will be putting Emeralds in my Greco Les Paul (they are on order but I don't have them yet). I plan to wire in coil splits as well, so I can report back to you after I have them installed if you want (I plan to write a review also). I also haven't played the VHII, but I've read it splits really well because of how uneven the wind is, so when you only have one coil, it still has plenty of output (provided you use the one wound hotter).

I recommend you to look at Stormy Monday's and Mules. No, they don't split so well, because they're low output. The splitted sound would be a tad weak. But the clean in between sound (bridge and neck together) of my Mules is to die for. I can even funk with it. Does a good Daft Punk so to say. I think the Emeralds are a bit too hot to get there.
