Title: Riff Raff in a Gordon Smith - do I go for it?
Post by: Twinfan on April 16, 2006, 09:17:54 PM
Hi folks.  I have a Gordon Smith SG1 that I really love, and it's about become my main gigging guitar as I've just joined an AC/DC tribute band.  Yes I will be Angus, but I won't dresing up!  My SG looks exactly like a '61 reissue Gibson but with just a bridge pickup.

I'm running the SG through my Marshall JTM60 or my 60w Laney Klipp with just a volume booster for solos.  I love the sound of my SG, but I've been toying with the idea of fitting a Riff Raff but I'm not sure it'll be worth the expense and hassle.  Gordon Smith's are a real fiddle to re-wire and have loads of capicitors etc wired up to the pots.

Have any of you guys and gals swapped the standard Gordon Smith pickup for a Riff Raff or Mule or Stormy Monday?  How do they compare?  What did you do with all the capacitors etc?

Cheers!

Brow in this forum has Gordon Smiths. I'm not sure which pickups he has in it though.

If I were joining an AC/DC tribute I'd get some Riff Raffs no question!  :D

Hmmm.  Will a standard Riff Raff do the trick, or could Tim do me a special "Angus" wind?????

I have a Riff Raff in the neck of my Gordon Smith Graduate60 (as John mentioned above).

If I remember correctly the GS1's only have a bridge humbucker? If so, I've never tried a Riff Raff bridge pickup, so can't reallt comment on it.

Also, the Riff Raff I have is an older version. I believe Tim winds it differently now? So any opinion I do have of my Riff Raff, may not 'fit' with how the pickup is now winded?

Cheers Brow.  Has anyone on the board tried a Riff Raff bridge pickup then?  I don't think I've heard anyone mention it if they have?

I may need to wait until the new site appears to hear one...

I've got BKP's in my GS Graduate, although I had them sent to the factory to be installed before I got the guitar.

You could rewire the whole guitar to get rid of the problem with the capacitors? Cant be too hard to do, if its just a single bridge pickup surely?
