I got Halflife 2 yesterday, installed today, and it keeps freezing after a few minutes of gameplay.. All was running fine till I got to a bit where it needed to load a new area so I left it for around 10 minutes, still hadnt loaded, tried to open task manager to close the program and it wasnt responding etc, and the only way I can get my computer back to normal. VERY annoying. My laptops safely (apparently) above the minimum spec, and even after changing all the graphics settings to low or medium, it still does it.. annoying as I buy a game and expect it to bloody work, especially as the loading time is bloody huge aswell!!!
Also (not regarding HL2), I arranged my icons on my desktop in a way that I like... yet when I reset my computer they move back to the left hand side, and "auto arrange" is enabled even though I unchecked it  Whats going on here?
Cheers for any help

Seems like you need more ram. How much memory do you have in total and in the task manager how much is being used when hl2 isn't running?
Dunno about the icon thing, but just to let you know too many icons on the desktop slows down your pc, keep it neat and tidy!
Oh! and i noticed you have it on your laptop. Maybe it is overheating, causing a CPU slow down (Science bit: Metals conduct less well at higher temperatures due to the metal nucleus vibrating faster- faster vibrations= less freedom for the electrons to move about= slower laptop.)

I have 1gb ram whihc I thought should be enough as the minimum spec is 256MB.. Anyway I went and checked the video settings in HL2, changed everything down to minimum and it seems to be ok now.. I suck at the game though

Might be time for a video card upgrade. 8)

It's a good game, glad its working. I downloaded my cop to see if it would run before buying, lets just say 256MB RAM just isn;t enough...

:D I played HL2 on my system 512mb RAM & 128mb Graphics card & had no problem playing it. Make sure you`ve got no other programmes running at the time you play. Then when you`ve finished playing HL2 get FarCry......
I`m currently playing Oblivion [ Elder Scrolls IV ] & have upgraded my graphics card 256mb.......Huge Game !!!

Haha, I've set all my graphics settings as low as possible, its definately improved, and it doesnt even look cr@p. I wanted to get Oblivion, but it was a tenner more than Morrowind (ESIII if you didnt know) so I just got Morrowind, bloody awesome game, I hate the fact that you walk so slowly to start with though, I cant wait to get good speed upgrades

you can try dropping yer sound down from High aswell, that speeds the loads up. also, make sure 'Full screen anti aliasing' & 'Anitstropic filtering' is OFF rather than on 'low'. Puts a huge strain on your GFX hardware and doesnt make THAT much diffrence..
Unfortunately, unless you have a purpose built gaming laptop, then most GFX cards in them arent really up to running HL2 and such, and even some one the expensive 'gaming' ones arent brilliant.
Far Cry is AMAZING btw and you could probably buy it for £9.99 these days, it will run better than HL2, and its just as good :)
FEAR beats both of them in the graphics and action stakes, but ye need a beast of a PC to run it well :(
