Title: Peavey 6505's
Post by: maliciousteve on April 17, 2006, 04:33:35 PM
So i went to Denmark street in London today and i came across a Peavey 6505 with matching cab. I was using a new Jackson DK with EMG 81 and 85's. Now the high gain input was far too much for me. Even with the gain rolled down and some highs taken out and presence rolled back i found the sound to be quite naff. It sounded like i might as well have played with a Metal Zone with all the gain up.

So i changed input to normal gain. I thought this sounded better than the high gain input but still the sound wasn't what i was expecting. The sound was far too fizzy (and i thought my set up was really fizzy).

could this of been because of the emg's? the cab?  because i've heard some really good sounds out the 5150's but i couldn't come close to those really great sounds with that amp. What does every one else think of these?

5150 and 6150 are pretty completely different beasts.
Peavey intentionally "beefeed up" the 6150 which in many's opinions (mine inc.) f***ked it.

That's weird, i thought they just changed the name. Why would you change the tone of an amp when the reputation of it was great

My bad
first it's 6505 lol, my mind is shot.
Was it the 6505+ you tried? (this has an extra power amp).
Also, newer 6505's had chinese made tubes and NOT the Sylvania ones in the 5150 (Peavey used up the Sylvania's and then switched). Then they went to New Sensor (Sovtek) in late 90's.

I have tried both and thought the 6505 to be OTT myself.
Cannot find much info. but am sure I read they tweaked it to be VERY brutal output compared to 5150.

They come with very poor tubes....this is common in all peavey amps, a tube swap does them wonders!

I'll also ask the obvious....did you crank it?

^yeah, i've heard they sound cr@ppy un-cranked (when i tried one, it was uncranked), mr ibanez. Glad to see you've joined the forum, sir!

that being said, unless it's second hand (being a 5150, it probably is, then, lol), in the UK you could get an engl or something similar (laney) for the same price or less that'll eat it for breafast...

They're exactly the same, Peavey didn't change anything. There are articles on their website, they only changed the name because Ed obviously owns that.

Except they DID change the tubes, as stated by Peavey :)

But Peavey never used great tubes anyway, replace those and it'll be a big improvement.

A couple of years ago I used a 5150 to try out a schecter c1 blackjack that I was interested in, and I experienced many of the things you're describing. I didn't buy the guitar because it sounded so awful, but reading this it must have been amp  :(
Still, I bought a Cort X custom instead, which is a far better player, so alls well that ends well  8)

A shop called Rhodes in Denmark street. They don't have any ENGL's in there unfortunatly but they do have quite a few peaveys (XXX and JSX) and some nice guitars (USA Jacksons and others)
