This is a songwriting demo I just completed. The guitar tracks feature a few BK pups (Cold Sweat, VHII, and Trilogy Suite) in two guitars. All rhythm and lead guitars used the same mic'ing scheme, I just accented the '57 for the solos. (Pictures of mic setup below)
Clean gitars are Splawn Quick Rod 1st Gear
Rhythm guitars are Splawn Quick Rod 2nd Gear
Lead guitas are Splawn Quick Rod 3rd Gear
HBE CPR compressor on all guitars

No EQ added, just guitar > HBE CPR > Splawn Quick Rod; a bit of reverb was added to the clean guitars to give them a bigger image.
Thanx to PhilKing for the use of his nylon string guitar, as well as the use of his kitchen to do the recording! And thanx to Phil for the loan of his '74 Ric for the bass tracks. (Bass was tracked with a Korg PXR-4)
Drums as Drumkit from Hell, GM kit. Strings are East West Symphony Orchestra.
Mixed in Cubase.

I like the symmetry of the piece as well as the recording of the clean parts (and the playing on the solos! Woo!). As this is for a songwriting demo it shouldn't matter but the drums sound somewhat robotic and it drew me out of the music to some extent. Please note this criticism is coming from a midi moron who doesn't have a clue how to program drums but desperately wants to. It's a fairly lengthy song but didn't feel like it. 2 thumbs up.

:D Bloody Hell Ben You sound more British than i do !!
You been listening to Maiden & Sabbath again !
There are so many UK metal overtones in this
LOVED IT !!!!!!! :D
Why have you got a square of Gafer tape on the Cab in front of SM57 ? I asume it`s for a reason
:D 8)
-
Thanx for the replies! :)
The gaffa tape is just to mark the sweet spot on the cab -- nothin fancy!!
-
yer great song TO... +1 on the UK metal stuff...
quality of the recording and playing is excellent!
nice one...
-
:D I thought you were going to come out with some outlandish recording reason something you`d discovered !!
X marks the spot !!
Has this track got a name ?
:D 8)
-
The working title is Outlanders. Lyrically, it's little on the offbeat side, more in line with songs we've done like Gift of the Southern Oracle and Near Dark.
-
:D Don`t forget Ben to bring a copy of the album to LGS for me.
I like Gettysburgh [ i think that`s how you spell it ]
When you gonna record the 2nd album any plans yet ?
:D 8)

Well, there are 3 songs 100% done as of now. We will road test them this Summer and see how they hold up, but I think they are definites for the next CD.
I plan on tracking band demos of the songs this Summer @ SIR; will probably do 2-3 songs, live drums/guitar, and overdub everything else.
At the same time, we're gonna keep writing new stuff. Probably won't go into the studio with a whole new batch of tunes until some time in 2k7.
There are a few more BKs I want to get before then, as well. (Holy Diver, Crawler, Black Dog ...)

Very GOOD Ben
Bravo Sir, thou hath nailed the Blighty sound with aplomb :)
-
Very cool, man! Thought I recognized the cabinet (i have one too, and Rivera rocks! ) So Which pickup did you use on which part. That was Awesome, by the way.

Thanx, Lifted. My bottom cab is a Hiwatt.
The clean bit in the beginning is the VHII.
All of riffing and soloing once it gets heavy is the Cold Sweat, just used different settings on the amp, and emphasized the '57 over the 319.
The harmony part is the Trilogy Suite.
-
Very Interesting, T. O., It's Awesome How good the VhII's sound clean. I have one on my wish list. Where are your P/us located on the guitar? (neck-mid-bridge) And what type Guitar, again?
-
Oh, goody, get to show my guitars again!!

Oh, yeah so YOU'RE the dude with that crazy Green Axe. I remember seeing that one before.; Beautiful, mate.
-
It does have that British vibe doesn't it! That must have taken a while to record. Sounds great Ben! :D
-
Thanx, Johnny!
It took about 2 full days to track and mix.
-
Just thought I would join in as I heard the CD demo yesterday (through about $80 zillion of stereo equipment), and the sound is really great (other than the hi-hat  ). The tune itself is excellent and I can't wait to see what PJ comes up with on this.
It is classic early metal sound and Ben proves once again what a master of the genre he is ( when he has the right tools :P ).
-
Thanx, Phil! Even tho I think you're just happy b/c you can hear the bass on this one!! PDT_008

Just got around to listening to this. Yes, OK, let us know when you've got a version with with real drums :) but such petty nitpicking aside: Mmmm, yes, super sweet tone throughout and quite the composition! :) This is gonna be a audience fave live, no? :)
-
Thanx, Carlaz!!!
-
Nice gear, dude! Sweet song too, very epic sounding, i like
-
Thanx, ant!
-
I particularly like the clean intro, very maiden, tis gooooooooood
-
Nice tune, strong Maiden influence, love the faster bit towards the end :)
Slight threadjack, but I have a few questions about mic-ing for guitar (I've only ever recorded direct thru a speaker sim):
I can see the SM57, aligned close the the centre of the cone, but what's the other mic? You've mentioned mixing the two mics - what are the differences in sound between them?
At some point I'll record come clips of my BKPs for this forum so any hints on how to mic will be much appreciated :)
-
Thanx, Antag!
As for the mulit-mic'ing, I had a thread not too long ago about recording electric guitars using different mic'ing schemes, and there were lots of helpful posts on there.
I usually use 2-3 mics when I record guitar tracks. There are 2 reasons:
1. THE MICS SOUND DIFFERENT. So, you blend them. The SM57 has a particular sound, and a good one; so does the 319. If I want to accentuate a certain sound, all I do is adjust the balance of the mics instead of EQ. I try to use EQ as a last resort.
2. YOU GET A BIGGER SOUND. With 2-3 mics you get more air and a slightly different sonic picture than just using one mic. I like the sound of layered microphones, however. Some people like the directness of just one mic.
For example, listen to the intro to Number of the Beast. Each guitar has 2-4 mics on it. Then listen to the intro to Wildest Dreams. That's a single SM57 for each guitar track.
Here's the thread I mentioned earlier:

Some cool riffs there! The palm-muted bit near the beginning reminds me a lot of "Natural Science" by Rush from their "Permanent Waves" album. In fact, the riff in "Natural Science" actually occurs after an extended clean/acoustic intro section, sort of like here.
What pickups were being used for the leads during the faster section around 2/3 of the way through?

Cold Sweat.
