Title: Which one is the most underrated Humbucker?
Post by: COMKEEN on April 24, 2006, 08:33:05 PM
Which one is the most underrated Humbucker? Which one doesn't get enough attention here on the forum? Which one is a real insider tip?

As some of you may know, I am currently looking for a new Humbucker for my Epiphone SG (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3506&sid=3c4c600bd550986a4e0dc40bb6fc62e8). During this search, I've not only read every single entry in the Player's section (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=5), but also a lot of posts here in the Pickups section (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=3) as well. It seems to me that - from what I've read here on the forum; of course I could be wrong - there are pickup models which are "more famous" than others and on the other hand there are pickup models which aren't very popular (at least here on the forum). So I thought this poll might be not only fun, but also informative!

It occurs to me that the Mule, Nailbomb, Miracle Man and Warpig, even the Crawler, prevail, while - for example - the Riff Raff, Emerald and Holydiver are not as popular. Well, maybe it's just the fact that the major part of the (most) active, frequently posting forum members actually own Nailbombs and MMs. What do you think?

Sweet idea for a post! nice one. Dont own any myself, and i dont wanna vote on a pickup just because i havent heard it mentioned as much, because as u said, its the most underrated. But still, nice one. The results will be interesting!

Looks like the Emerald needs some promotion.

IMO FWIW Black Dog's, Emerald's and Riff Raff's deserve more attention than they get on here, but there again, I would say that... ;)

I can't vote either as I am a single coil but I am seriously thinking of getting a h/b guitar to venture into the dark side-but then again, I might go for P90's cos I love them.

I actually voted for the Stormy Monday.  As a neck pickup for older blues and rock, I don't think you can beat it.

I was gonna say Emeralds aswell. Or Stormy Monday, they dont seem to be the most popular for some reason.

From some old post, I remember Tim talking about  the Emerald selling pretty well in other countries in Europe. :)

+1 on both these.  Emerald and Stormy Monday clips are pretty sparse on the ground in the Players section.  I think the Holydiver will get more attention once its form factor settles a bit.

Looks like the lower output, vintage style pickups aren't as popular then...

Well, barring the Mule (which is certainly classic PAF-style) .... but its siblings the SM and the RR (tho perhaps less so) do seem to be trailing the Mule in popularity.

I added the humbuckers only to keep things clearer - I couldn't add that much options to the poll, anyway :?. But the Trilogy Suite seems to be very popular... this would also confirm Skybone's theory that higher output pickups are more popular than vintage oriented ones.

It was more observation than theory...

I used to have an Emerald, it was alright, but it didn't really do metal, does some good lizzy tones though, which I suppose it was made for.
