Title: Pickup Suggestions for blues/rock
Post by: guitarputt83 on May 24, 2005, 09:10:59 PM
I got a MichaelKelly Les Paul Copy. This thing is great, plays well and looks awesome...it is almost as good as the real thing. BUT, the pickups are par at best. I play mostly classic rock and blues. I'm into Clapton, esp the Cream years, Mick Taylor, Peter Green, Mick Ralphs sound in Bad Company, Free, Jimmy Page....etc.... The guitar is just slightly lighter than a typical Les Paul, but has all the over standard features: Rosewood board, mahogany neck and body, maple body cap, tone pros bridge, and the Jimmy Page mod to split the coils. What pickup suggestion would you guys recommend for me? I will also be playing the guitar through a Fender CyberTwin SE model (great amp, lots of versitility)

Thanks for the help guys,

Crikey Ratrod, you'll be after my job next

Welcome to the forum!

The Mule humbuckers with their alnico IV magnets would certainly do the trick-also worth a mention are VH II humbuckers for a slightly more aggressive tone.
Check out the players room for sound clips.

Thanks for the advice guys. Would you also recommend a possible electronics upgrade as well to go along with the new pickups?

If the quality of the electronics is shitee, it would be a good idea.
Personaly I don't often change the electronics, if they're 500k, respond well and don't crackle, I leave 'em stock.

Just have a look at the solder joints, maybe re-solder them, I would change the switch to a proper switchcraft though! :P
