Aside from the 2 fingers of scotch every day, I've been doing the following warmups in preperation for all the guitarring @ LGS!
Warmup 1
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/TwilightOdyssey/LGSWarmup1.gif)
Descending quadruplets. Go up the neck chromatically, one fret position at a time. When you run out of frets, go down one set of strings (eg, the 2nd and 3rd) and the proceed down to the 1st fret; jump to the next set of strings and repeat until you've done all 5 sets.
Warmup 2
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/TwilightOdyssey/LGSWarmup2.gif)
6 string arpeggio. I usually play it twice, and then go up a fret. Go up until you run out of frets, and then go back down.
Warmup 3
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v723/TwilightOdyssey/LGSWarmup3.gif)
String skipping arpeggio with slides. Play this one similar to the 1st warmup; when you run out of frets, go back to the 1st fret and play it on the 4th and 2nd strings, 5th and 3rd and lastly the 6th and 4th.
I play through this warmup twice each day.
Let's see your warmup exercises!!

what program do you use to get those nice neat diagrams Ben? Then maybe I can post summit legible :)
-
I've just been practicing the E5 chugs, pickslides and harmonic divebombs. ;)
Oh, and gradually warming the liver up with plenty of beer too. :D

I use Guitar Pro 4.

Well I'm not going to the LGS, but I do do warm ups every day or every other day if my fingers feel stiff/if I can't seem to hit any notes. Similar stuff to what you've put up Ben, but also doing sweeps, slowly, across the neck, then alternate pick up the high/low E string, sweep back across, pick up the E string, sweep back etc etc until I run out of frets.
Also I've found a great warmup/tech exercise to be simply playing 'random' notes on all the strings, moving up the neck again. I think this has the potential to really get your brain, left hand and right hand working together much more instinctively.
Sounds rubbish though unless you like The Mars Volta!

I'm with Mutley on the chugging lol! PDT_045
Still doing the usual legato exercises, which hit a wall a few months back with no improvement! Plus the spider exercises which are good for beefing your left hand up. Can't do sweeps so it's a bit late to start now as i don't think i will nail them in a week!
-
Lightweights....
I went out and broke my leg just so that I could have time away from all distractions to practice for the LGS.
Maybe I should have considered how I was gonna hop there but that's dedication. :?

-
Yahhh
I'll have a wash and change my socks!
-

well let me just say this... whilst i may be legendary when it comes to the sad world of internet forums... im NOT legendary at playing.... so yer know... expect nothing more than some powerchords... and maybe some open chord-picking if your lucky...
P.S... the real reason i dont play anything fancy is cause i dont want to show anyone up- im too cool for playing impressive things you see... im far above that...
-
WOW... Ben.. that first exercise is really cool.... jus started doing it... (probably seventy times slower than you but still...) thanks for posting it!!!!!
-
man, i wish i could go to LGS... :(

You're welcome. If you do that exercise for 10-15 minutes every day, you won't be playing it slow for long!!
-
I'm not going to get to this LGS, unfortunately, but I'll post my warm-ups. Aside from doing the one-finger-per-fret thing (1--2--3--4) up and down the fretboard I sometimes do these exercises, two of which I nicked from Joe Satriani and two I made up.
-
The other two.
Plus I often do the arpeggios at the beginning of Eugene's Trick Bag, by Steve Vai. And then there's some funky strummy stuff I do to get my right hand going. Plus whatever else I can think of. Some of the songs I wrote in the mid-90s are challenging for me to play these days, so I'll go through them occasionally.
-
Thanx for posting those, Searcher!!
-
yeh thanks mark!!!! that last one of yours is excellent too... Ben, your one and now Marks have just become part of my new daily practice routine.... consider yourselves very special indeed...
-
No prob, guys. Ben, I'll give your exercises a go later on today. Cool thread!
I can't believe how many times I had to edit those two posts!

Actually, no, I don't sweep pick it. Too easy. ;) Do it with alternate picking.

Hmm. I'm not au fait with non-Macs these days. You could take a screenshot of the tab and then paste it into a graphics program then crop it and save as a small JPEG. Or you could PM me for my email and send me the .pdf file and I'll edit it and send it back to you.
Or you can wait till Ben or someone else who knows that program gives you better advice.

nick i have power tab editor, a great program, but cant help you on the posting problem.... hmmmmm.... i would go with Marks crop and save as JPEG method.... that was what everyone did for those custom dream guitars everyone was making ages ago... remember?
-
I have grey hair appearing, NO I don't remember LOL
How do ya do a screen shot for pity's sakes?
-

Alt/Print Screen

Could'nt figure putting fingering or wordage into the TAB.
Simple though, first power chord into single picked "fast" run.
-
Hardly worth waiting for huh? LOL
Had to "prnt sc", open in paint, save as .jeg, open in phot prog. to resize, OMG! Phew, not easiest thing.
Back to playing, much easier :)

I think i might be going this saturday. I have to check out the Blackmachine and Feline stands this year. Can't wait to try out an 8 string. Have to say hi to Tim and the guys too and give them a CD if they want one.
I can't believe i haven't been to the LGS before. I've been going to the Music Live show for like 3 years in a row and i was really disappointed last year.
-
Im in Ireland at the moment for a wedding till Saturday night, gonna be there at LGS on the Sunday, but not playing very well.... :( I always play badly after a holiday, and dont even get a chance to try out everyones warm up exercises.
Cant wait to see everyone there!
-
and i thought this thread is about binge drinking :crazy2:

Finally got round to tabbing up one of my little exercises:
It's a pretty good stretching exercise consisting of string-skipping and alternate picking. You'll need to use your pinky for this one too.
Once you get back to the bottom slide up a fret and repeat. :)

Nice one Mutley, good streches!

I like this thread, some good excercises here. I might post up this 2 handed tapping thing my teacher showed me ages ago, just started donig it earlier for something to do and its killing my right hands little finger!
