Title: Miracle Man compared to others
Post by: i_baked_cookies on April 29, 2006, 07:04:50 AM
What is the closest Seymour Duncan pickup power-wise and sound-wise to the Miracle Man?

What about EMG, and Dimarizo?

i'd say the SD livewires and the EMG 81s are most like the Miracle Man, but both are sterile as $%&# active pups with no dynamics... Why do you even ask?
Don't know much about Dimarzios, sorry

In the roughest sense, the Duncan Distortion is like the Miracle Man, but without the cut, clarity and TONE.

I remember there was a comparison clip posted here featuring the Nailbomb and the Duncan Distortion. Surprisingly for an Alnico V pickup, the Nailbomb was much better defined and sounded tighter in the bass than the Distortion, which had a certain mush in the low end. The Miracle Man is even tighter and a lot clearer than the Nailbomb so you can imagine how big the difference between the DD and the MM is.

how would you compare the miracle man to the DD in terms of harshness and brightness, as well as the bass?

I have a duel allen head pole MM in an all-maple guitar.  and I find its very smooth and fluid in its soloing dynamics and extremely heavy when in rythme!!!

Ive played a few different guitars including a very expensive PRS I played today and no other PU has had the depth of tone and dynamics of BKP's!!!

The DD is harsh, the MM is not. :)

To my ears the DD sounds like George Lynch used to live whilst the MM sounds like he did on "Under lock and Key"  which is a good thing in my book

I have even got a pickup that Tim wound for me based on the same specs as an old S/D Distortion , but with the benefit of scatterwinding.
Still tinkering with that though.
From the basic specs alone it isn't that far off from a ceramic version of the NEW Holydiver.

If I replace EMG 81's with a Miracle Man set, I'm afriad I'll be disatisified with the power.  81's are so hot, and if I can't get that same power, I dunno.  I'm sure the MM is a much better pickup, I just don't want to be left with somethign noticably weaker that I'll be craving more power.

what i've found with bkps, whichever one, is that they very accurately replicate the natural tone of the guitar, with a sort of an eq curve depending on which pickup.  meaning, take a bright sounding guitar and a riff raff will make it crunch like f**k while a miracle man will make it tear your head off.  like wise, take a dark sounding guitar and a riff raff will sing like a diva while a miracleman will wail very loudly!  this is actually my only ever problem with these pickups, the miracle man is too bassy in a dark guitar.   i think i'll shift it over to a different axe and get a riff raff or mule, all the better to sing for my supper...

I had the same feelings before actually ordering my set of Nailbombs. I am an EMG user, but with all the reassurances from the guys on the forum, I'm pretty confident that getting BKP's is a much better choice. Won't know of course until I get them installed, but I'm almost 100 percent sure that going the BKP route is for the best. Besides, after owning EMG's, I've come to realize that they're overrated. Tons of guys that play really hot shred like Vai and Petrucci get unbelievably hot, thick, in-your-face tones from passives and they use DIMARZIOs (gasp!). So just imagine what a set of BKPs could do for  you.

yep. From what i hear, the MM is noticeably not as hot as an 81 (still very hot, but yeah...).

However, a forumite on here (MDV) sent his MM back to be wound to warpig output, and i think he says it's hotter than his 81 now- so you might want to look into a custom wound MM or send him a PM or something...

Yep. 22.8k. Its got the edge on the 81 in output as well as tone, now :D

Let me know when you get them installed and how they sound in comparison to the EMGs.

Will do, man. I honestly can't wait. I know they won't be as powerful. But, I'm looking for TONE. Something that the people EMG can't even spell. T-O-N-E!

Does anyone know if it costs extra for a custom wind???? I was thinking about someday getting a 20kOhm MM or higher output CS set, which would be sweet!

hey guys do you think the MM is more similar to the DUNCAN CUSTOM or the DUNCAN DISTORTION.

love the bassier voicing of the custom yet love the crunchyness of the DD. so MM aye?

Aye. Um, the Distortion's probably closer, though I doubt it's as powerful as the the Miracle Man.
