Title: Mix 'n' match pickups

What do you guys think about the idea of putting three different BKPs in an HSS configuration Strat?

I think Tim's usual reply would be to go for a calibrated set so that you get balanced output and compatible sounds in all positions, but wouldn't different pickups mean more versatility? Would the difference in output really be that great between pickups? Could you compensate by raising the low output pickups and lowering the hot ones?

What about, for example, Crawler / Apache / Irish Tour? Would position 2 be dominated by the Crawler, with the Apache drowned out?

Am I just completely nuts?  :stupid:

I think it would work, depending on what you're after exactly.  You'll get different sounds, but that's not a bad thing.  I don't think that the output balance would be a problem, but that's only an educated guess.  ;)   I'm interested in doing this myself for another guitar I'm planning, so I'm curious to how yours works out.

I matched a sinner bridge pickup with Mothers milk single coils and I am happy with the combination.  I thought about doing so with Apache's but I used the mothers milk because they have the same magnets as the sinner which I figured would be important for retaining balance.

I wouldn't go overboard with mixin unless you know exactly what you are looking for and have specific reasons for doing so.  As far as versatility, a set of BN pickups are going to be very versatile anyway across positions.
