Title: London Guitar Show-See ye there!
Post by: Drac on May 02, 2006, 11:16:36 AM
Hello, bareknucklers...
It's been a while since I've been active in this forum-
Been active with my band, playing some shows with Boltthrower on the Scandinavian leg of their tour, & for better or worse, drowning in guitar repairs-
I'm glad for the income, but hoping to pick up the pace of my new building in the coming year.

I wanted to say that I'll be making an appearance at the London Guitar Show, exhibiting 2/3 guitars at the BK stand, and hope to meet some of you from the forum at the show.
I'm really excited for the invite from Tim, and to meet him, Steve, and others from the house of Knuckles Bare...
I NEED to get out of my shop, and meet other that are as enthusiastic as I am about custom guitars-
I love Denmark, but the lukewarm enthusiasm of the Danes is OK at best, and if I'm to breakout to the next level, it's going to mean thinking more globally, and this show is a step in that direction...

Have put my excursion together in the 11th hour, in true Drac style, and my plans are to bring the Ipsissimus twins, the purple heart Wraith, & my toothbrush- literally all I think I can carry-cross yer fingers I make it!

All axes are fitted out with BK pickups, and will be ready for groping & manhandling. With any luck, I may part with them for a nice price at the end of the show-cases and all- and travel lighter back home to DK after the dust settles...we'll see about that!  -
Also thought to bring the Vorpal blade Vee-My personal #1 axe, but I don't think I can part with it at this point-wanted to bring axes that I COULD sell, if able...Considered the Gibrium Lawsuit SG extreme makeover axe, but as Gibson will also be there, I shot that idea down in flames too...Have to show a little respect. Too bad 'cause it's a Gibson-killer that fell from grace , and "eyecandy" , too...DAMN.

Back to work, but checking in intermittantly all the way up to my departure on Thursday morning-Would love to hear from any others that will be attending, and looking for some trouble to get into Thursday night as well-I'll be quartered in Brent, walking distance from the LGS-

Drop me a line if you dare-
Best regards from Drac,
& hope to see ye @ the Gig!

Glad to see you back.

What days are you going to be there?

I ask because unless something even worse happens to be aside from my broken leg, I'll be there on Saturday.

I've just bought some padding for my crutches (and Wembley hires wheelchairs if all else fails) so I'll see ya soon.

I'd be well up for a beer to as I'm local to Brent but I'm staying sober till I can walk on both feet!

Sorry to hear that about yer landing gear...

I'll be there @ the Show for the duration, on my best behavior, unless I misbehave, or am shown the door-

My mobile number is (+45)-40 13 71 86)

give me your number and I'll hunt you down Thursday evening...
going to dash to the ImperialWarMuseum Thurs.afternoon for some pix of the WW1 tanks-closes @ 6pm-I'll call you afterwards...

cheers!-you might give me your number as well-send it in a PM if you're concerned with privacy-

regards from Drac

Hey there Drac
We're on the stand next to BKP so come over and say hello

We hope that a few of the BKP forum-ites will pop in and have a chat
We'll have lots of BKP loaded axes to grind as well.
Our good friends at Black Machine will be across the way from us as well
(and a good few other UYK makers about as well)
So well worth coming along to check it all out

Drac, those are some crazy ass axes!

Guys I REALLY wish I would be "home" for this, darn darn darn!!!!!!!!

Anyway, as I won't be there :( and it is just around corner = I will have to wait another whole year GRRRRRRRRR, please have fun and have a beer for me!

And Drac, to heck with gibson, they need some MAJOR shaking up and to actually Hire a QC dept. Maybe if you and Feline show YOUR proper "gibsons" they may take notice of how a REAL guitar should be (and for those thinking I am Gibbo bashing, firstly Ya Boo Sucks, and secondly, I own a '91 Les Paul Standard ((which took forever to find a "good" one and then still needed work)).

ok guys, the 10% chance just jumped up to almost 100

but i gotta know a few things:

could someone potentialy pick me up @ gatwick? on saturday morning at around 9am(or i'll just take a cab, just tell me what i gotta tell the dude)
or at least drive me back to gatwick on sunday evening.
i pay fer petrol.

and, if ben and phil arent able to take my silly ass in for the night of saturday -> sunday, is anybody willing to let me use their couch/floor/backyard/doghouse for the night?
i'm potty trained and dont drool (much - and that only when looking at sexay gear)

the air fare is only 200euro for the 2 days so i figger, what the hell, its an once in a lifetime experience to get to know you folks.. unless we make it an annual experience.

and how much is a daily ticket at the door?

now i just gotta find out how to get TO the airport here.. and get permission from the boss  :D

Taxi from Gatwick would cost a fortune.  Your best bet would be the Gatwick Express train to London Victoria (runs every 15mins and takes 30mins), and then the tube to Wembley (one possible route is Victoria Line to Oxford Circus and then change to the Bakerloo line to Wembley Central) .

I'm afraid I can't offer lifts or crash space, but I will buy you a beer.  How's that?  :)

Will there be any Second hand stands there for used guitars/amps/effects etc? there usually is at Music Live, would be great if there is one at LGS.

Get the Gatwick express to Victoria Station and have alook at the tube map from there, it should be easy enough to work out.

Hey guys- good to hear from you Drac. I shall look out for you old bean. I hope to see some of you at LGS- I am going on Sunday- my only free day. Davey, I would agree with what has been recommended- the Gatwick express is your best bet and is much quicker- driving to London is a pain. I live near Gatwick but am working Saturday otherwise I would gladly have met up and set you your way. If, for any reason, you have any problem you can call me on 01403 262228. Oh you'd better have my real name which is Steve.

Davey
the Gatwick Express is quicker but more expensive than the other trains that go from Gatwick. there are plenty of trains that go from Gatwick to London Victoria or London Bridge. You may be able to get a "one day travelcard" that will also lt you travel on buses and the tube as well and it may be a cheap option.
Otherwise you may have to get a travelcard when you get to London.

My recommended routes to Wembley

Train to London Victoria
Tube from Victoria to Green Park (Victoria Line)
Tube from Green park to Wembley Park (Jubilee Line)
Walk for 5-10 mins (turn right out of station and walk down hill, past Wembley Arena)

or

Train to London Victoria
Tube from Victoria to Oxford Circus Victoria Line)
Tube from Oxford Circus to Marlebone (Bakerloo Line)
Train from Marylebone to Wembley Stadium station (right next to Wembley Conference Centre 2 minute walk)
or

Train to London Bridge
Tube from London Bridge to Wembley Park (Jubilee Line)
Walk for 5-10 mins (turn right out of station and walk down hill, past Wembley Arena)

Hey here is the ultra simple and dirt cheap way to get form Gatwick to Wembley. All on the same train line with only one change and a bus.

Catch Overground firstcapitalconnect Train from Gatwick to Blackfriers Station

Get off train stay on same platform (if you smoke you can have one on this platform while waiting)

Get next all stations train to Hendon

Get off train @ Hendon

Get 83 bus from just outside Hendon station

Get off bus at just outside the door of Wembley

This is most of the trip I take to Feline every other week so I've really got it down now.

http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/ - for train info

www.tfl.gov.uk/ - for bus info

Good luck and I'll see you there.

It's a type of rail ticket that also lets you use the tube and bus (with a few limitations as to areas it's valid I believe)

OK Guys I did it!

I kept my crippled frame up and on the Feline stand for THE WHOLE day...

I must say I was notably helped by Drac my new smoking bud and all round good dude.

Now I gotta go do it again...

Strange day Friday as it was off and on busy all day and boiling hot. I only managed to hobble to a couple of stands but today I have a plan of attack.

I hear Saturday is mental busy so this is my big challenge.

Saw the new Rebell Yells for the first time and they look good in all way - they say don't judge a book by the cover but Tim and the guys have done some way cool packaging on these, nice.

So if any off you guys are coming today get your ass over to the Feline stand just next to BKP and say Hi.

BTW Chalie form BUSTED is gonna be at the show so you can't miss THAT!

Got back at about 7 this evening after leaving at 4. 3! bloody hours to get home, every single train i got on it was either delayed, i had to change train, change lines about 3 times and get a bloody bus. Only take about 30 minutes to drive there!

But inspite of lousy train service, i had a pretty good time and got to do everything i wanted.

Tried out the Blackmachine 8 string
Bought a new set of Bareknuckles (holy divers sound amazing)
Playing through Framus'
Said hi to Steve and Tim at the stand
Saw the Biomechanical guys play, they are so underated it's not even funny. They blow Dragonforce out of the water.

Did try to say Hi to the guys at Feline, but they were pretty much swamped (the same with Tim and the guys) things are looking up for both those companies.

steve when you try stuff there... is it like... massive waiting in a queue until you get a quick couple of minutes testing something then have to bugger off? and can you just ask to try stuff without any intention of buying..?

The maximum i had to wait to try something was like 3 minutes, that was at the Blackmachine stand because every one wanted a go on an 8 string. The best thing to do is to basically be an arsehole and get right in peoples faces to try out their product (except the bareknuckle guys, they're very nice guys and are more than happy to let you try out anything).

Everything i played at the stands i had no intention of buying (except the bareknuckles, couldn't resist) and alot of the guys at the stands know that too, but that's what they're there for. The only guys that seemed to get annoyed with it was the really old guys selling second hand guitars. But at the end of the day...f**k em

I don't think i saw any of them but i did see a big Line 6 stand full of their stuff so you might be able to find one and get a bargain i also saw a Digitech multi effects thing going for £300. Everything will be a bit cheaper tomorrow too because they lower prices every day and try to get rid of alot of stock on the last day.

cant wait now, s'gonna be awesome... are those biochemical people playing tomorrow? never heard of em... but if they outclass dragonforce then they must be worth a look

Yeah i think they are playing tomorrow. Look out for a stand with huge Framus Cobra stacks with a Blue PRS with floyd rose and Ibanez RG's. They are truly awesome. Might not play as fast as dragonforce but they are tastefull, intelligent and imaginative players. Great use of harmony and melody.

They are NOTHING like Dragonforce, so cant really be compared to em... its a completely different genre... BM being the cr@p genre, DF being the good genre

I suggest that EVERYONE tries that 8-string that Black Machine have on their stand, it's a $%&#'n awesome guitar.  The BM guy will most likely have his Diesel amps there too (drool).

I tried out one of the 8 strings on the stand. I really didn't like it. The low F# sounded like a fart. Not too keen on how the bodies are finished, with no paint or finish what so ever as it scratches really really easily like one of those Ikea tables    It also felt cheap, not worth the 2 grand they ask for but that might just be me though

Had a great time at the show yesterday.  Was great to see Jonathan again, and to meet Afghan Dave and Ben, only briefly managed to say hi to Davey though as we were off to grab some food before heading to the live hall for The Quireboys (great rock'n'roll), Nico McBrain and friends (great selection of covers, and it was great seeing all the little kids mob him at the end for hugs and autographs) and Therapy? who really kicked out some noise and nicely played some of my fave songs of theirs.

Then we pretty much ran out of time and didn't make it back to the BKP/Feline stand before close of play.

I actually didn't try a damn thing, as unfortunately TC Electronics didn't have a G-Major there.  They did have a rather awesome vocal harmoniser thing though, which would be great for solo gigs.  :)

saw the 'Chris George' band... was awesome... never heard of him before but he was a great guitar player- (doing the behind his head stuff and everything) and the drummer got up and did a solo around the hall- using the floor, railings, someones feet, a guys baseball cap...... was just amazing.....

tried a couple of cr@ppy peaveys, a WEIRD scalloped guitar that was like £179 next to the bareknuckle stand and the XT Live for the third time... (bought one) for like £50 cheaper than advertised at most places, with a case for £15 worth £40... so not a bad deal all in all...

anyone see that crazy guitar or bass (cant remember what it was) with the blue lights which went up the fretboard and to the headstock in a sequence? sooo cool!!!

I'm back and recuperating from what was one hard but very worthwhile LGS.

To all the guys I got a chance to meet for the first time , it was an absolute pleasure.

Drac, Ben, Phil, Muttley and Davey. I can only apologise for the disturbing nature of some of our conversations but you do get the full 100% in person.

I couldn't make it in today (Sunday) as I'm pretty shot from 2 days hopping around on crutches so 38th, Jon Mac and SAMBO - I hope we can meet someday soon. You had a lucky escape.

We did well on the Feline stand and I think you'll see quite a few geetar playing Girlies wearing some of the Feline T-shirts as they proved particularly popular with that demographic.

I also got to play some CHEEZZY 80s riffs (V badly) with Ben and Jonathan so I embarassed myself nicely with a blank mind and open canvas.

All good there then...

I didn't buy much myself apart from Ben's CD, some instructional DVDs, earplugs and a capo.

I did talk to Tim and Steve & decided on my next pick-up - Black Rebel Yell with gold poles - a great sounding pickup with a totally cool look.

My only slight disappointment was my new Bareknuckle Pickups T shirt!

Great Tshirt but I bought the WRONG size.. DUH! :(

Anyway, once again good to see all of you and thanks again Jonathan for the opportunity to help represent Feline! PDT_003

thats really surprising, I thought they were very nicely made guitars with a great feel - the Tele he has is amazingly clear tone with a MM/Stormy Monday combo.

I cant say how much i disagree with you Malcious. I cant see how you can say they felt cheap. Blackmachine guitars are some of the best built custom guitars I have ever played. Comparing the wood to Ikea even in jest.....jesus, the wood is so expenisve you could buy a whole Ikea shop! But if you didnt like how the played, thats fair enough, thats down to personal taste, which after my rant I will accept.

I played alot of things today. My desire for BKP's increased ten fold. I also tried out a guitar on the Feline stand which was amazing! I couldnt believe how much I liked it. Just felt extremely comfortable. I cant think of much else.

Here are some pics. Only really got some of the Blackmachine stuff. Should of taken more of other stuff...but what you gonna do.

Enjoy!

If anybody has anymore pics put them up here.

It's all down to personal taste really. It might of just been the particular 8 string that i played (the one without fanned frets). I didn't get a chance to play the other guitars but the one i did play, i didn't like and it didn't feel right (not just because of the extra strings and wider neck) and i'm not the only person who thinks this as i've spoken to a few people about them and they seemed to think the same way i do.

Although the 8 string did sound pretty cool from the 7th string and up.

The last Feline pictured the Les Paul was my absolute favorite.

A vintage look but with Jonathan's total access neck joint which really lets you use the whole fretboard. It's got mules fitted and I was really surprised at how much saturation you could get with those, a Big D and the Marshall.

As for Eye Candy on the Feline stand - Sorry but Sunday was my day off!

Total access neck joint eh? Thats the thing I'm starting to hate about my Epi LP, upper fret access is sometimes a bit shitety, but I love the sound and feel of LP's.. I want a Feline LP with this snazzy neck joint now... I can feel some GAS building up again

Sambo- see pic Ben Davey and Steve.I am the really square boring geezer. Mrs 38th came too and was getting a bit fed up with me disappearing to talk to mates that I kept bumping into so I was not able to hang around as much as I'd like to have done.It was great meeting Tim, Jonathan (Mrs 38th loves the tee shirt Jonathan), Ben, Davey, Phil, Drac ( as Davey says- definition of metal) and, of course, Johhny Mac. I was expecting a Tasmanian Devil to arrive and we'd have all said, here's Sambo.

that paul sounded a lot better with the power screamer though. even more saturation and it SCREAMED!

i loved every minute of it!

i'm going to start uploading my pics sometime now hehe. dont have as many cool ones (jonathan & 38th have all the cool ones) was too busy playing guitars.

that all maple gunslinger RULES!!!! but i like the purple panther neck a lot better.. needs to be wider though ;) i LOVE yer fretwork though man. its TOTALY SWEET! (how's your head though mate? modified the big d with a couple of rubber corners yet?)

i got a couple of (prety good i think) pics of the feline axes for your drooling pleasure.

i wonder if drac managed to get the ukulele \m/ LOL
probably sounds like cr@p, but it's SO COOL!!!!!!!!

the neck joint on the paul is shaped like a neck through. virtualy non existant heel. upper fret access is amazing (for a paul)

its been a pleasure hanging out with you guys! this weekend rocked my socks off! you all (and i mean ALL) are an awesome bunch! felt like i've been around people i've known for ages.

Here is a picture of the heel area that might help illuminate what it is like
We have a deep set neck joint - goes right under the neck pickup too like on OLD Les Pauls and then shave away the heel area to help get to the top frets

Hi Davey, you missed out on more real ale with JohnnyMac on Sunday night, and today I took Ben for Timmy Taylors and Sam Smith daughts and one more steak and ale pie before sending him back to New York.

I had great fun at the show and of course picked up a lot of pickups, but I am going to get the coolest thing later this week.  I am going over to Matamp to get a RED MiniMat.  Hope you all went to see them with Hayden working there.

I forgot to say I met Mr Pig, HJM and Pin from Sikth too, all top blokes!

Went for a few beers and some pub grub in Islington with Phil and Ben after the show to a pub called The Camdens Head. Met another forumite Jay Palmer too. Had a good time and talked guitars and music all night.

Ben had pints of Fullers London Pride, Adnams Broadside and ham, egg and chips!! He loved it!

I'm thinking of an eminence, either the Red Ryder, Swamp Thang, Canabis Rex or Tonespotter.  Not many to pick from eh!  I am thinking more of the Red Ryder first, but I also need a speaker for a hot rodded Princeton Reverb and so I can try a couple and see which works best on each amp.  The other good thing is that Ben is also thinking about getting some, so there is another potential testing source there!

I might have to sell the JB as I just ordered the pickups for my chambered Les Paul.  These are the same Mule set as Tim had on the Morgan LP at LGS, only uncovered coils.

I'm sure it will - these are the new unpotted Mules, they sing a little more than the potted ones and on a chambered guitar which sustains for days anyway, I am sure they will be the set the go to.

Mind you the Black Dogs in the 53 sound amazing - Ben wants it for the next cd!!!

*pouts and stamps feet*

Nah - on a serious note Drax makes some great guitars  and is a really great guy - I liked the two I saw on Tim's stand

I hope he comes back over next year too (or sooner)

Also a big thumbs up to a few of the other nice guitars I saw from custom makers at the show- Nathan Sheppard, Black Machine, Morgan & Organic were all there showing some cool stuff.

I like the fact that we all get along well too- I have been best mates with Doug from Black Machine for over 15 years and have been really pleased to meet & hang out with all the other makers at events like this.

When I was in the hair cutter's the other week, they had these rubbery "heads" all over the place! I think they were for demonsrating haircuts, or something, but as I'm in the middle of reading Robert E Howard's unaltered Conan series, I immediately thought 'SEVERED HEADS!'. I usually have my camera on me at all times, so I took a couple of pics ... creepy stuff!!
