Title: Sustainer Pickup Rewind?
Post by: JamesHealey on May 03, 2006, 06:49:31 PM
Would Tim be able to rewind one of the Fernandes sustainer pickups or make something similar, because i like the idea of them but they sound absolutly terrible as a neck pickup?

good idea! i second this question. I'm guessing there's something different about the basic construction of this pup compared to others though...

I wonder if Tim has ever kicked around the idea of making sustainer units???

There was a discussion regarding this a few months ago, I think it was in the tech section.

You could mount a 'proper' (for want of a better term) just behind it, I guess it would be best to use a single coil sustainer unit for this method.

the sustainer doesn't actually function as a pickup, does it? I'm sure I remember reading that in the sustainer equipped 'HH' guitars you have a bridge humbucker and effectively a neck single coil.

Certainly the HB ones operate as a pickup, and I beleive that the single coil sized one is also a pickup (otherwise there would be no point in having a pickup selector).

i know that with the humbucker sized ones, there's a single coil pickup and the other half of the unit is the string driver.  i don't know about the single coil sized ones, i suspect they don't work as pickups.  i had actually wondered myself if Tim could mount one of his single coils in the unit, but the idea of just mounting one right beside it should work.

From fernandes site:-

How the Fernandes Sustainer works:
The patented Fernandes Sustainer is powered by a 9-volt alkaline battery, and works with the Driver in the neck position, the Bridge pickup, and the Sustainer circuitry to give you infinite sustain. The driver sends magnetic pulses to the strings, which makes them vibrate. (The driver also functions as a great sounding neck pickup when the Fernandes Sustainer is switched off.)

Personally rather than attempting to rewind it ascould be epoxy potted or anything to stop people from finding out what little tweaks are required at the driver end.

It's probably more sensible to put a proper pickup right behind it (you should also ne able to get away with moving the sustainer away from the neck a little and mount the pickup infront of it)

Would you be thinking of a neck HB or a single coil (single coil sustainer and regular pickup may be the easiest install)

You may also require some shielding between the driver and neighbouring pickup, as it may a case of  the hum from hell

oh right, so they work as pickups, but only when you're not using the sustainer. Makes sense.
