What exactly is the pickup spacing? i know the humbuckers have the choice of 50mm or 52mm but how do i find out what spacing i need?

Measure the distance between the first string and 5th string at the bridge. Fenders are a bit wider because of their tremolo, I believe Floyd Roses are also. Those gibson bridges are 50mm.

It's the distance between the 1st string and the 6th.

Gibson type guitars are usually 52mm, where Fender type guitars (I assume) are 50mm.

It's both.  The centres of the pickup poles should be in line with the strings.

Other way around, actually.  ;)

It can vary slightly though.  I've seen some trem-equipped guitars that are about 54mm and some non-trems that are spaced at around 48mm.  It depends where you measure as well.  The neck spacing can be fractionally different to the bridge.
