Title: Amp Head
Post by: TomW on May 07, 2006, 09:25:51 PM
I'm looking for an amp head for about £600 that I can use at gigs. I play mainly metal like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Ozzy Osbourne stuff.
If u have any suggestions please let me know.

DSL100. No Doubt. That you could get for about £300 on EBay and then a mighty distortion pedal, you would be sorted.

old or new metallica?

old, then probably marshall of some kind, as donovan says.

new, then you're in a bit more bother...

I've heard good things about Danelectro's Black Paisley and the Digitech Death Metal, or there is the ever popular Boss series. If money is no object then there is the Krank Distotus Maximus.

Do you want channel switching or a simple "point and shoot" rig?

If you want/need channel switching, the DSL/TSL's are good amps, if you just want a single channel amp that you can add tone colouration using pedals, I'd say get either an old JCM800 or a Laney GH (with footswitchable gain boost). With EL34's in, many say that it's the closest you can get to a JCM800.

You're best off going to a shop with your gear (guitar & pedals if you use them) and try a few out.

i have an ENGL Fireball head going.

60w 2 channel.

I play all the music you mention (and like more extreme metal.. but dont play it, cba with weird tunings!) and stuff like power metal. The amp gos from
classic to all out extreme hell 8)

Gain in the middle or 1 o clock means the clean stays clean and the gain channel gives more than enough for anything up to In Flames type stuff (with me nailbomb).

Reason for selling? I dont gig, wont be gigging, its overkill for home (cant even use it now i work weekends) and i need the money.

I have been using my split channel JCM 800 for a while - along with either an HBE power screamer or HBE Big D pedals and it sounds great for 80s metal and rock. We had it fired up at the LGS at the weekend and it sounded great.

The JCM800 sounds pretty cool, but its a bit too expensive. So I'm thinking about getting the JCM2000 DSL100.

I agree...the Laney GH50L sounds good for the price.

B-52 AT-100. 100 watt all tube amp for around $600USD. It's similar to a Mesa Boogie too, but you can easily get a "Marshall-like" tone. I'm sure you can cover all your areas of music with it.
