Title: DiMarzio Igno initial thoughts and modification.
Post by: themetallicat86 on December 07, 2021, 02:03:31 PM
Never one to rest on my guitar laurels, I decided to try out the Igno.  Admittedly, I'm not a Polyphia fan.  They're extremely talented individuals and I very much respect their skills, but that's all for me.  However, this humbucker has flown well under the radar and I have no idea why.  In stock form it has what I'd classify as goldilocks output.  Not too hot, not too cold.  None of the present frequencies are obnoxious (although the low end isn't the tightest in the universe).  Great attack and fantastic note definition and a VERY singing/musical quality (sorry, best words I could think of).

I really only have two complaints.  The first is that it doesn't sound the most fantastic when I back the volume knob off.  The second is that while it is responsive to your hands/playing, to me it could be a lot better.  Also I realize that both of my complaints are largely related.

Now on to my modification.  All I did was essentially apply DiMarzio's own air mod.  I utilized some little plastic rings from a previously cannibalized pickup in place of the Igno's keeper bars and the simple mod was complete.  The results are quite nice!  Of course, some output was lost, but I can deal with that (see my previous post on enjoying lower output humbucker).  Now turning the volume knob down sounds more like it should to my ears and the dynamic range is also vastly better.  Still not perfect, but the improvements brought a smile to my ugly mug!  Also, there's now a sweet and woody quality to everything which I love.

If you're looking for some clips of the pickup in stock form there are a couple of videos (one from a place called Pig Guitars and one from Arnold Plays Guitar when he reviews a Dean Gordon guitar with an Igno installed) that give fantastic examples of what this pickup can do.  Food for thought, I hope the day finds you all well!
