Title: Noob with new git looking for BKPs
Post by: n_mountain on May 09, 2006, 10:30:26 AM
Hi,

first post! :)
I'm about to get a new guitar and I'd like to try some BKPs.
I already mailed Bareknuckle, but i thought while i wait for a reply I can also ask you. :)
This is the guitar:
http://www.mayones.com/eng/katalog.html?nazwa=Setius%20GTM-7&menu=0

Here's more or less what i mailed Bareknuckle (copy/paste ;)) :
Right now I play a Schecter 006 Blackjack which also has mahagony body. It has the classic SD JB/59 combo. So I will try to describe what i want with this as a reference. Please excuse if my explanations will be a litlle weird, but I find it hard to describe tone. :)

The guitar will be a seven string and have a 5-way selector (Megaswitch P).
Neck:
I like the 59er's tone, I like the slightly hollow, snapping sound it creates in the neck position. I'm looking for something, maybe even hollower, a little more single coilish, without loosing the vintage paffiness. I use the neck for distorted solos a lot, and for cleaner parts.
Bridge:
The JB is also not bad, but I'd like to have more Bottom. I play almost all my distorted rhythms and half of the solos with the bridge pickup. My basic tone is probably between metal and hard rock (Extreme, Pain of Salvation). I don't need to get into the extreme EMG territory but I like to roll back the volume (or switch to a crunchier setting) and get some vintagey sounding tones.
And naturally all my in between positions should sound awesome. :D

Oh, and I forgot, I play progressive rock with my band. Everything from clean to heavy.
 Thankls for any help
Stephan

If you don't go for the calibrated Nailbomb set then I'd say Nailbomb for the bridge and Crawler or Cold Sweat for the neck.

The Nailbomb set is very cool. First set of humbuckers I've owned that had a cool sound when both of the pickups are used at the same time.

... and Crawler or Cold Sweat for the neck.

hmmm?
their quite hot, aren't they?
What's the difference (sound wise) between, say, the Crawler and a Mule??

whohoo,

I just listened to the Crawler neck clean demo, and it sounds great!!

The Mule will give you more of a traditional PAF tone. The Crawler is a good all around pickup, especially if you're doing any coil splitting.

Thanks Dave,
:D

and how would the Cold Sweat and the Nailbomb sound in the neck?
(maybe compared to the Crawler, I always like a reference...;))

The Cold Sweat will have a little more high end because of the ceramic magnet. It'll definitely be smooth sounding though. More of a modern progressive neck pickup sound, like John Petrucci.

I actually quite liked Petrucci's neck sound (haven't listened to DT lately), but nowadays I think I'd prefer it a little less modern, just a little though...

Nailbomb or Crawler will get you what you want. The Crawler will be a little more versatile but the Nailbomb neck pickup in my Les Paul sounds incredible, so obviously I'm no help to you in making a decision!

The BKP neck pickups don't use ceramic magnets i don't think. I'm pretty sure the cold sweat neck is AlNiCo V

Two more questions,

what is the advantage of a calibrated set??
I always thought it would give me more variety using different pickups. Suppose you use a 5 way switch, are the in between positions sooo much better when you use a calibrated set?

And what address do people write to when they talk about mailing Tim?
The info@bare... address?
Just wondering if I sent my mail in the right direction? :D

The calibrated set genrally works better when using the pickups togerther in whatever combination you choose.

As for the e-mail address, I think all roads lead to Tim at some point. :P

The Mule will give you more of a traditional PAF tone. The Crawler is a good all around pickup, especially if you're doing any coil splitting.

In a post from early last year, Tim compared the the Crawler to the Mule, saying the Crawler has "more power but similar vibe", being "fatter and a touch brighter with unpolished Alnico V magnets" (the Mules can be IV or II).

The Crawler is in many respects quite similar to the Abraxas (in sets, they have the same neck pup wind), though the bridge Abraxas is slightly more genuinely a "Mule+" than the Crawler. But IMO the Crawler is very versatile: a good middle ground between the vintage PAF tone of the Mule and the somewhat hotter "metal" Alnico pups like the Holydiver and the Nailbomb.

And the Crawler/Abraxas neck is smokin'!  8)

Hi,

just wanted to say thanks for all the help !  :D
After reading this and the suggestions Tim gave me I've decided to go with the Nailbomb (b), Crawler (n) combo.

I'll just have to check one more thing with the luthier then I'll be ordering!

Cold Sweat does not sound at all like the neck he was describing.... def. not a ceramic unless the cold sweat neck is alnico like the MM.

I'd say the Crawler neck is a good recommendation though!  Or a VHII perhaps ;)

I don't think BKP make any ceramic neck pups.

You couldn't ever go too wrong with a Crawler/Abraxas neck.  It rules!  8)
