Title: 1966 Epi Les Paul on eBay?
Post by: Twinfan on May 09, 2006, 01:36:50 PM
Anyone else seen this (eBay item 7413671398)

Is he seriously trying to get £1200 for a Korean Epi with a Bigsby???  I don't think they did stick-on serial numbers in the 60's  ;)

Who did the valuation on this guitar?
It is clearly a Korean made guitar dating from late 1990s.Your photos even show the serial number & the serial number system does mean something.  According to Epiphone customer service:

F or T or U = Factory Code
First Digit = Year  (2 = 2002, 3 = 2003, etc.)
Remaining Digits - Sequential Serial Number

Guitar was made in April 1997 at the Unsung factory in Korea.
The pickups have been changed and a PASSIVE EMG (Korean made) pickup put in the neck and maybe as you say a USA DIMARZIO in the bridge.
The Kluson tulip style machineheads have been replaced with German Schaller units (not surprising in a 9 years old Epiphone).
Probable realisable value would be £400 tops
Not a bad guitar but not what your advert claims
Sorry to burst your bubble if you were led to believe you had something expensive or rare.
Maybe it was just bit of humour....a fun bit of silliness.
Shame on you if you knew and were trying to mislead potential buyers though.

I've mentioned in another post about a 'Genuine USA Gibson Les Paul' that is up for sale at the moment - item number 7413001213

The guy bought it from China - must be real then...

Why mention "genuine" Les Paul, if it is?

Truss rod cover says "Gibson" not "Custom" and is a 3 screw cover.  USA Gibsons have two screw covers.

Serial number looks too big and is painted/stamped, not just stamped into the wood.

You can't read the "Made in..." because of the flash reflection.

Rear covers are cream and not black.

This is an Epi that's been Gibson'd IMHO.

Just contacted the seller:

=============

Hi there - I don't think your guitar is a USA Gibson Les Paul. The truss rod cover says Gibson vertically and is a 3 screw cover. USA Gibsons have two screw covers and are plain or say Standard, Custom etc horizontally. Also the serial number looks too big and is painted/stamped, not just stamped into the wood. The rear covers are cream and not black like a Gibson's would be.

Sorry if you think this is a genuine Gibson but it isn't. I think it's an Epiphone that's been Gibson'd. I think you may need to amend your listing...

==============

We'll see what happens eh?

it's not an Epi, it's just a fake Gibson.

the headstock is wrong - the shape of the open book looks slightly off, and, being a Custom, should have the split-diamond inlay and 'Les Paul Custom' script on the TRC.

No it shouldn't :? Custom's have block inlays. Isn't it only the Supremes with the split diamond design?

EDIT: oh, i'm sorry - i thought you'd meant split diamond inlays in the fretboard!!

Yes - a custom would have the split diamond inlay (on the headstock)
the style of the serial number doesnt look too out of place & the serial number would make it a 1995 guitar
the pearl blocks look a little plastic to me from what i can see like on a cheap guitar
the truss rod cover looks wrong unless it was to poorly replace a lost or broken Gibbo one.

But all looks a bit suspect to me- wouldnt touch it myself

Are we becoming Ebay vigilantes here??

The fake Gibson is up to £620 and I've reported it to eBay.  The seller replied to me and told me a local music shop said it was a Gibson and that he's just seling a guitar, so what's my problem?

I really hope someone doesn't get ripped off.

I think that the 'winning' bidder for that Gibbo was out to teach the seller a lesson. Obviously had no intention of ever paying and left some storming feedback which sums up the transaction perfectly.

What is even funnier is that the seller has bought 7 guitars from China at a total cost of around £1000!! Wonder how he is going to shift them now?

Ooops!
