Comes as standard with Electro Harmonix valves branded as Marshalls. Two or three (can't remember) ECC83 pre-amp valves and one or two EL34 output valves. You're looking at around £10 for an average ECC83 and £15 for an average EL34 - max of £60 to re-valve the entire amp. Go to Watford Valves website, read their reviews and choose which valves would suit you best!

Ta Twinfan to be honest if I had the money(or was in a band) would go for another fender twin 100watt, which I used to own.....or even my old 70's hiwatt 50 head and 4x12

so sort of the vibe between the 2 in the little one I have....any ideas

I THOUGHT THAT THE POWER TUBES IN THE JTM 30 WERE 5881s and not EL34- or they were when it was first released

Nope, they're EL34s.  Same as in my JTM60.

Marshall went through a phase in the early 90s where the quality of EL34s was SO bad that they changed over to 5881s for a while.  Those Sovtek 5881s are bulletproof mofos & can handle alot of abuse.

Marshall just did a small mod to the bias supply in order to set the bias pot in the correct range for 5881s/6L6s.

The amps using 5881s generally came with a '5881 equipped' sticker on the front panel - they made it a selling point.

So long as the valves are biased correctly, you'd be ok to use either 5881s or EL34s in that amp.
