Hi all, just wondering aif anyone, either from hearing it at the LGS or otherwise, if the new Rebel Yells can pull off a Slash style tone, basically GnR or Velvet type tone?
Tim suggested Mules or Stormy Mondays if I wanted PAF style, VHII for a bit hotter PAF style and said Rebel Yell's were even hotter than that, but I cant get the Steve Stevens audio sample out of my head, it is by far and away the best sound I have heard from all the samples but I also know I want to sound similar in tone to Slash.
I have a Shecter C-1+ so it's gonna have the same tonal qualities as an LP, and a Marshall AVT-100 so tyhat should help with a Slash style tone anyway.

I'll let some of the other guys chime in but I'd just say, the RY will do pretty much most things....the Slash tone is sweet though, typical of Alnico II, the RY is Alnico V and a touch more aggressive.

Slash uses PAFish A2 pups (I'm blanking on the exact model), so my gut instinct take me along the Stormy Monday/Mule lines Tim suggests. But I don't think enough people on the forum have played/heard the new RYs yet to have a good sense for their vibe ... though those clips from Steve Stevens did sound pretty jaw-droppingly awesome! 8)

I've had a set since November, in a PRS Standard (all mahogany, with trem). I love them but they are quite a bright pickup with a lot of mids. I think you could back off the tone but they are not the Sweet Child O Mine tone. Stormy Monday or Mule is the ruler of that sound I think. Still the RY's are great pickups and I love the sound of them.
Isn't the Schecter C1 a neck through guitar? If so, you might want to check out the Abraxas set. At LGS they were on a neck through Ethos and they smoked. I am saving up my pennies to get Jonatan to make me a Mockingbird (which is also a neck through), and I will put an Abraxas set onto that.

Sorry - C-1 without the plus is neck thru. I have VHII's in my other PRS, which is an Artist II and should have pretty much the same construction as your C-1+. They have more bottom end than the Rebel Yells, and nowhere near as much mid or amp drive. That said, they can do a pretty good Slash tone but probably with a bit more power than the original Duncan's he uses.

Any idea what BKP setup would be similar to these? Whilst still blowing them out of the water of course! ;)

I have an Emerald/Mule set in a LP and that can do what you want. The Mule uses an alnico IV magnet, which is like a II but sweeter. The Emerald is A5 and gives a ton of harmonics and a nice driving tone without being too much. The other option is a Riff Raff set. This is a little less gain than the Emerald or VHII but will give a sweet sound in a carved top guitar. I had it in a Les Paul and only took them out because I want to move them into my 335!

I had the same stock Gibson pickups in my LP Std, and when I was looking for BKP replacements, part of the email I sent to Tim said that, though I wasn't super unhappy with the stock pups, I did find them "dull and mushy, especially with higher gain and lower tunings". Tim quickly recommended the Crawlers, which I bought and have been happy with ever since (in fact, I just finished whacking out some rhythm tracks with them over lunch! :)).
The 498T/490R set is ~14.00-14.50K A5 and ~7.50-8.00K A2, respectively, while the Crawlers are 15K A5 and 7.6K A4. So the main differences are that the Crawler is slightly hotter and the neck is A4 -- oh, and that the Crawlers are made with skill, love, and scatterwinding by BKP! :) So I didn't get a vast tonal change, but I did get a noticeable improvment, which was what I wanted.
Alternatively, the Abraxas sets use the same neck as the Crawlers, but are 14K A4 in the bridge; a bit sweeter toned than the Crawler bridge. So it might get you slightly more of a Slash vibe than the Crawler bridge, actually. For this output range, though, I think you definitely want the Crawler/Abraxas neck pup! 8)

I owned a RY set for a few weeks and can attest that they push more than the typical Slash tone. They really rock, but they drive your amp and have lots of (good) mids.

I'm very interested by your opinion about Abraxas. I have RY, Mule and VHII like you. How would you describe the Abraxas? The only clips I listened make me think it could be too thick, without enough cut for that Slash tone. But, described as a Mule+, they could bevery interesting for my LP Std.

is it possible to get a A2 mule in the Neck and an A5 Mule in the bridge? would that be similar in set-up to the pups i mentioned earlier from the LP Studio?

They're not that metally, it's just that I've been doing metally clips (and Ratrod did a few too!). ;) They're really designed for fat 70s blues rock kinda things (they're signature pups for Geoff Whitehorn, with whom I confess not being terribly familiar with previously but that's the kinda thing he does. Check the clips on the BKP product page, which he recorded.) They can handle metal stuff quite well, but have enough vintagey feel to keep that in -- depends a lot on your amp settings and playing, of course. Tim uses Mules sometimes in his Ozzy cover band! :)
Crawlers seemed to be seen a bit as the "like Mules, but hotter" until the Abraxas came a long which really is a bit more like a hotter Mule, I think. I'm still plunking with Tim's SM or Mule suggestion for closing in on Slash tones, but if you wanted something hotter, in the range of the stock Gibsons, I think the Abraxas would also be quite appropriate. The Crawler bridge has a bit more grunt than the Abraxas, which worked well in my case since I wanted to head up into metally territory sometimes, back off into classic rock feels sometimes .... They also coil tap very well ....

I have a Tokai LP with Mules in and a TS-808 into a Fender DRRI (admittedly the DRRI isn't the standard model) the neck pup comes very, very, very bloody close to NAILING Slash, Sweet Child O Mine. Both pups are also WEEPINGLY good clean at 8 on the (guitar) volume. The harmonics are also very special.
Maybe you should go for a Mule neck and a hotter bridge?

BKP-90's in the neck can do stunningly good slash tones, if you crank the mids on the amp a wee hair more than "usual".

So what does everyone think will be the best BKPs to be a (much) better sound similar to the Stock Gibson pups on Studios and Standards? Thats the 490R & 498T; Burstbucker(Pros)

Well I asked this very same question in another thread and it seems a HOLYDIVER for the bridge would be the go. I'm very happy with my neck Mule. It's fuggin awesome, so sweet for the blues lead thing. With the Holydiver in the bridge I'm hoping I can go all power chordy chuggy type thing and then (I know I can) go to the neck for less distortion and sweeter than sweet lead tones. It seems a bridge Mule is almost too sweet (for the bridge) y'know? JMHO.

Alnico V usually will do a very good Slash tone though, regardless of whatever Slash uses.
From what I've heard from the Rebel Yells (and knowing Steve Stevens tones are generally my bag) I would definitely go with them!
