I've just bought a Laney GH50L and Marshall 1960A cab and have the option of running them both at 16ohms or both at 4ohms. Is there any advantage to running them at either? I'm guessing running them at 4ohms will hame it a bit louder (less resisitance)?

Different tonal qualities - if you can, I really recommend trying both. The general consensus seems to be 4ohms is tighter, and 16ohms is more 'roomy'. It's hard to describe, but there's a definite difference between the two. For my amp I much prefer 16ohms and hate 4ohms, but I'd prefer 4 for metal.

I prefer the sound of 16 ohms myself, but you should try them both and see which sounds better to you.

Cheers - I'd read somewhere that Marshalls sound "better" at 16ohms but I wasn't sure if it was just one person's opinion. I'll try them back to back at 16 and 4 and see how it goes...

What about 8 vs. 16?
