After a bit of sweet talking (aka, gentle coersion), PhilKing loaned me his new double creme Holy Diver to try in my M1 Tiger before he returns to the US early next week. I was able to plug it into my rig today and take it for a nice, loud test run ...
The inital sound was very dull, and I wasn't getting any real gain. I realized my strings were just about dead, so I threw a new set of DR Pure Blues on the guitar. This improved things greatly, but I was still getting a really muddy, soft low end. Hmm ... I checked all my connexions; everything was right. But, then I noticed: AHA! I had the volume control almost all the way down! Upon turning up the guitar's volume ... voila! Instant, mean crunch!!
Sonically, this pickup is great if you want to capture the late 70s, early 80s metal type of sound. The midrange is very prounounced on this pickup, giving it a vowel-like voicing that really makes the guitar stand out with lots of gain.
The high frequencies are a bit darker than the VHII, which can also be a blessing if you're using a lot of gain. It's not quite as open sounding as the VHII, either, but it has a lot more push! With a mild boost from the Dos Mos (about 10dB) going into Gear 2 of the Splawn Quick Rod, I got a thick, harmonically complex distortion tone, but it still retained clarity and note definition. I would characterize this pickup as the harder, looser cousin to the VHII.
I hope the volume is good on the video. I had the amp cranked to about 95dB.

Nice clarity on that pickup. Good playing too. I'll have to wait till I'm home to judge the tone--though I'm sure it's good--because I'm at an old computer with horrible tinny speakers right now.

To be sure: it's the new new Holy Diver (16,2K, Alnico V) or the Rebell Yell ( prototype that Phil bought some weeks/month ago)?

new holy diver

Ok thanks.

that sounded pretty cool, ben. I like the "woodiness" of the tone...

As Davey said, it's a brand-new Holy Diver picked up from LGS.

Any chance of some decent clips mic'ed up properly? Want to hear what these new HD's sound like when done with decent mics instead of the camera one :D

No, sorry. I'll probably be removing the pup tomorrow to give back to Phil. The vid gives the essense of the pickup, which is better than any strictly written description. Beyond that, I don't have the time to make and record a pickup demo at this point.

Ah right ok fair enough then!
