Title: Recording effects?
Post by: Petre on May 14, 2006, 08:16:48 PM
Hey, i was just wondering, does anybody know any really cool effect combo's to lay down on songs to give certain effects? (badly worded). What i mean is like making piece of songs sounds like you are hearing them over the phone (ala Opeth?) . this may sound like a silly question, but is there a way of making vocals sound like astronaut speech?   . Ive heard it on a few songs but i dont know if its done with effects or if they just slapped in actual recordings of astronauts   . Any ideas?

Thanks
Petre

For the phone effect, you just need to set your eq, lots of high end no lows... i remember seeing on guitargeek that dino from fear factory used to use an ibanez lowfi pedal, not personally tried one tho.

Suppose you could just try setting up an unused channel on your amp for those situations.

Probably the same setup, lots of high end eq setting and lowfi pedal for astronaut type vocals, i suppose youd want to add alot of gain too (maybe) because you want it to crackle right?

If you get Opeths live DVD, its got a documentary of them recording deliverance and damnation. I think they tell you on there.

cheers window licker  :) , altho i was more referring to after-recording aplication of the effects (the songs i write myself never get performed). but ill check out the no-low-end thing. im guessing a tad of distortion too..

As for the astronauts thing i see what u mean about the phone call thing. not sure tho, sounds alot more muffled.. maybe something needs to be done recording-side of things rather than post-recording.

@ Steve, i got opeths dvd, thats where i heard about it and all (id never really noticed it before :S ) . I dont think they explain how they do it tho. I thought they just mentioned they liked going to that one producer because they loved how he could do these things  :P

Cheers guys

Most recording programs have a preset in the EQ settings called 'AM Radio', 'Megaphone', or similar. This will get you that kind of sound with a minimum of fuss. As noted before, another way is to scoop out everything below 3-4kHz and above 8kHz. This will give you a very narrow, nasal, band of sound.
