Title: Pickup Covers
Post by: GREENYFAN on May 15, 2006, 02:24:36 PM
What are the advantages/disadvanatages of Pickup Covers. I am thinking of getting a set of  Zebra uncovered Mules for my Les Paul and wondering if there is a difference in Tone or volume with or without the covers .

Somebody (Mr Benedetti - France - hand wound pickups) explain me there were a very little loss of treble and basses but less noises risks.

There's a lot of voodoo when it comes to covers, and their possible pros and cons.  If there is any difference in the high frequencies, it is minimal, and the wind is altered accordingly if needed. Might be better shielded and less microphonic, however, I'm not sure if nickel or chrome will actually magnetically shield a passive transformer (which is what a pickup is in its simplest form).

That being said, I prefer covered pickups. Whether this is purely psychological or not, I can't say, but I certainly prefer covered pups to open.

+1

However, I would prefer uncovered pickups on Fender based designs
