Today my Peavey XXX 112 came in the mail, and after a few hours of playing, I decided I want to get a more metal tone out of my SG. In fact, I want to get the heaviest, darkest tone I can get out of it. Would a calibrated set of Warpigs custom winded be the best [I'm not sure about the custom winding job, but I heard of someone getting a MM tightned to 27k or so and that sounds like something that'd be great for me  ]. Thanks for the help!

^ nah, i think mark/MDV/D man (to quote his many monikers!) got a MM overwound to 22.8K or something. Since it's ceramic, I think it's slightly hotter than a "normal" warpig.
To be honest, I'm not sure you'd need any hotter than a "normal" warpig.
But wait until some of the guys who've tried them chip in.

yu really won't need anything hotter than a regular warpig dude. They are BEASTLY!!!

haha, gooooood. I'm lovin' it :D . But I'm still interested in getting them winded a bit more to pull off something different, if Tim says the option is available. I'll hopefully be able to order these them next Friday.

Just like these hopefully! :D

The options certainly available.
Overwinding the miracle man (by about 5k) brought out more highs and compressed the sound more, but it retained clarity. It doesnt sound quite as big (not far off at all) but its more staurated and still as articulate, which is what I wanted. The output to my ears is maybe half the difference between a miracle man and a pig, but above the pig rather than below. Its close.
What I asked for was something like "Pig output or more if it can be done without compromising the tone", but left exactly how hot, in terms of number of k DC to Tims judgement, rather than pick a number out of the air. I recommend you do that if you want a more powerfull pickup. There are disadvantages to overwinding that work against the heaviness, and i dont think its easy to quatify where that happens, it must just be experience in what wind sounds like what. Leave it to the experts.
That said, the pig is as hot a pickup as you could want. I play some very heavy stuff and the stock warpig is pretty much my benchmark pickup in terms of best tone + high gain (custom double screw pole 23k MM cant really count as a benchmark!).

Hmm, well, after reading that I'm sort of stuck on what to do and seeing as I'll be ordering these tomorrow I don't want to make the "wrong" choice for me. I read the Miracle Man is more suited to a lead sound where as the Warpig is suited to rhythm, so would you suggest custom wound MM's to suit my needs for both tones? If they're nearly as heavy as the Warpigs, plus with better leads, then I'd rather take those  .

I'd really recommend you talk it through with Tim if you're unsure, especially if you're going to try something other then the "standard" options.

Yeah, definitley talk with Tim. The man's great and an excellent man to go to for debating pickup selection. Hopefully it's not too late. Although I bet any bkp will satisfy you MORE than your current pup.
