Title: Pickup Reccommendation - Warpig?
Post by: Erocku on May 18, 2006, 05:52:07 AM
OK, I have a Epiphone Elitest Les Paul Goldtop, and the pickups in it just arent cutting it for me, although the guitar plays like a dream.

I think the warpig might be what I'm looking for.

I would like to get a bridge pickup much like the EMG 85, not the 81. The 81 sounds thin compared to the 85. The 85 has more meat or chunk to it.

I was also wanting your recommendation for a neck pickup to go with it. I've read on the forums that the warpig doesnt clean up very well, so make me a recommendation on that. I've had a Seymour Duncan '59 in the neck of one of my guitars and liked it alot.

Final question. What cover/non-cover do you think would look best with my goldtop? I was thinking zebra or chrome.

Also, if any of you have any comparison clips of the warpig with another pickup, please post, or link me to it. Thanks a million. [/u]

Hi Erocku.

If it's meat you want the 'Pig will deliver. Low end grunt with just enough treble to balance things out.

I've got the 'Pig/Mule combo in my custom Explorer which works nicely, it's mahogny with a maple top/back so the woods would be very comparable to that of your LP. The Mule can stay with the 'Pig well enough with both pickups on (It's actually my favourite sound from that guitar), even though on paper there's a big drop in output between the two.

Another suggestion if you want sweet cleans would be the MQ, there's quite a few clips in the players section to listen to, personally I think it sounds divine, a definite candidate for my next set of Bareknuckles.

The Warpig is exactly what you want. I never tried the EMG 85 (I did have 81's) but those that have say it's similar to the Pig.

As for the looks of the Pig, I think the distressed cover would look very cool on a goldtop.

or we could be really radical and suggest burnt chrome. that would look ...unusual... in a gold top ;)

serious suggestion: double cream

The pig cleans up great. Not as well as some lower outputers obviously, but its got the best clean tone of any nutter-pickup, bar none.

Cool, I might just go with dual 'pigs. I still don't know what finish I want.

indeed. In that case he should def go for 2 rows of allen bolts. Distressed , battleworn, AND burnt chrome covers. And then, just to top it off, get the p/u's double wound with ceramic mags. Hell u could even throw in a 9 v battery boost. Just fer fen eh

Erocku, ive got a pair of black BKP`s on my Gibson LP goldtop. And it looks much better than expected.

If you also get a pair of black warpigs, youll have the aweinspiring twin rows of black allen bolts.

I would go for black, it is definitely the coolest colour.

Heres some pics.

Ooooh, _tom_ thats a stunner :) love the all black theme there :) I've been a bit concerned that black covers might not look so good in a wine red guitar, but having seen those I think it'll look brilliant :)

Yeah looks a lot better than the gold covers I originally had, more classy and less cheap  8) Just go for the all black covers, BK seem to be the only guys that do black ones (other than EMG) so at least your guitar will look different to the masses  :D
