What is the definitive sound of both buckers on?
-
I play with it. To me it sounds like a single sometimes, obviously its not the same, but it has that twangy chewyness.. that probably doesnt mean anything to anyone else but it does to me  I could do a recording of Mules in the middle position if youd like?
-
Cool - lets have a listen!

shite playing but you get the idea.. first clean bit is a Fender amp patch I think, second is a low gain JCM800 patch. Used my V-Amp 2 as usual.

Tom
bit hard on yourself are'nt ya?
...com/tom roger suk? :)

hahaha, tom rogers uk actually, tom rogers was taken and it offered that I think  I should really find out how to change that address or something :P

I love that middle position for clean stuff. I would use the neck position more, but the pickup selector is in the stupidest place on that guitar!!!

haha no way! I find it the best out of all guitars I've played. I never knock it, and its convenient to just flick it up to neck with the side of my thumb or side of palm from neck to bridge. Then its just as easy to flip back down. Its only middle position that takes a bit more precision, I find strats switches much more annoying :P
-
SG switches are by far the best positioned switch I've ever played with. Get the strap at the right height and its exactly where I want it.
-
I love the LP middle position- nice and twangy- as Tom says, a bit like a single in some respects.
-
It sounds really thick and round to me though... Not twangy at all on my SG or Les Paul...
-
You're obviously not playing hard enough ¬.¬
-
I use the middle position a fair bit for clean sections, especially arpegio or chord work. I find it sounds more "open" the neck pickup, but isn't as upfront as the bridge. A nice warm combination.

If you listen to a lot of the early Fleetwood Mac and Zeppelin (with the LP), then you will hear the sound of both humbuckers. Stan Webb (Chicken Shack), still does this, and you can see him adjust the volumes to balance each pickup as he wants. If you get a pair of BK's with one A5 and one A4, you can get the early Peter Green sound with both pickups on.
-
middle position with both volumes up full is nice and twangy (as previously stated), I've used this tone for much of my clean stuff.
mixing the volumes can really open the door to many tones too - if you roll the neck pickup back to around 4 or 5 in the middle position you get a slightly smoother/less edgy version of you standard bridge tone (very nice for bluesier moments).

twangy chewyness..
Vimto bar, anyone?
-
I tend to use it with the bridge rolled off to add some edge to the neck tone, or with the neck rolled off to fatten up a bridge tone.

What about some insanely technological solution, like a footswitch that jacked into the guitar to control pickup position? (Just idly brainstorming .... :))

Wayne the guitarist in the pot belly blues band uses both together, but turns the neck pickup down slightly to get that old greeny/Clapton sound.
But he is looking at getting some bareknuckles made out of phase, he uses irish tours in his strat which he no longer uses at the moment
