My bands loading in our gear at the Whiskey in Hollywood getting ready to do sound check. All the other bands on the nights bill are milling around checking out the competition.
I pull out my '75 Les Paul Standard, that looks like a guitar that's been played 31 years should look. No fake relic here, the real thing. Anyway, one of the guitar players from one of the other bands shouts out "nice Les Paul" with a really condescending tone, and all his little cronies laugh like a bunch of school girls. I do my best "Revenge of the Nerds" voice and say "thanks"!
We are doing the sound check and I look out in the crowd of faces and all the other bands guitar players with their AAAAA Flamed Maple Top Custom Shop blah, blah Gibson's have their collective jaws laying on the floor. After the sound check they surround me and start asking what kind of pickups are in the guitar. I laugh and tell them "these are just regular old Gibson pickups", and walk a way.
After the gig they surround me again and ask again what kind of pickups are in the guitar. Forty drinks later, which they paid for of course, :P I finally tell them they're Bare Knuckle Nailbombs.
Tim should be hearing from a bunch of guys from Hollywood soon!

A gig at the Whiskey? Great dude! Legendary place.
Why do some musicians dis other people's gear, btw? Not everyone can afford a custom shop guitar. The sound is more important than a AAAAA flame top. Even more important is how you play the thing.
Great story Dave. how did the gig go?

I guess it's kind of like cars. In California it's really bad, you are what you drive. So I guess you are what you play, or at least in some ones else's opinion. :P
The gig was great. No one threw anything at us, at least.

Great story Dave. And at "the Whiskey". Now you can say it, " It's good to be the King".. :)

Got a pic of your Les Paul? I bet it looks awesome.
What were these other guys playing anyway? Custom shop PRS's that look like their finish is 1 inch thick plastic?
-
Nice spotless PRS's and Gibson Les Paul's. Not anything like mine.

I would change the white hardware around the pick ups to black, but that looks beautiful. Those pricks have no idea what they are talking about XD
-
actually that really /is/ a nice guitar. i'm not really a les paul man to be honest, but if i would be, i'd want it to look like that one.
-
Indeed it does look nice! I'd take that over a spotless shiny LP or PRS any day!

Great Story Dave. I had a guy ask me about my Strat on Saturday night after a gig- a muso, He loved the tone. I told him all about BKP's.

i think you should buy a cheapo Stagg\Westfield\Encore Les Paul, load some BKPs in and make it playable.
Then gig and say 'yeah it was 60 odd from a pawn shop but sounds great doesnt it?'
Mind you, i also want to take a paisley strat loaded with Uber Sinners into a a Jazz Club and then blast out some Zakk Wylde riffage :P
