Title: How to identify neck & bridge pickups?

Hi tim, im not sure i put the black dogs in the right way, how can i tell the difference between the neck & bridge? i did not fit them to this guitar from the box, andy's fitted them to another LP, then i took them out, forgot to make a note of which one came from where & picked the one with the slightly longer cable to use for the bridge.

I think there's usually a tiny N somewhere on the neck.....Tim will remind me if I'm wrong.

If you can't find that, get a multimeter, set it to ohms above 20k, and measure the resistance of the pickup, highest is bridge, and lowest is neck.

yeah ok, ive got those knocking around all over the place.

im not going to buy one just to work it out, it would be easier to swap the pups & see how they sound!

cant i stick them on my tongue, like a duracell battery or something?

i'll look for the small N when i can be bothered to unscrew them, but i had a good look before & could not see anything.

is it printed, stamped or hand written?

At a guess the longer lead will be bridge but as HJM says use a meter to check.

If memory serves me correct they're both the same spacing so a DC check is the only definate way of checking.

I'd recommednt to everyone who's changing pickups, get a meter! Maplin were doing 2 for £5 not so long ago - do the job! All you need is resistance and continuity, but takes all the guesswork out!!

i shall look into it, but i am very technically inept! i was amazed with myself for even changing them in the 1st place!

check the side of the polepieces with screws, and the exit point of the wire.
screws to neck for neck pick, wire to bridge for neck pickup.
bridge : screws to bridge , wire to bridge.

erm....but doesn't this work out which one is which does it if you swapped them around they'd look teh same wouldn't they?? - I'm trying to picture it???

exit point of wires usualy is to the bottom of the guitar.
and pickups screws are usually only on 1 bobbin.

the neck pickup screws to neck , bridge pickup screws to bridge.
