Title: Pickup Choice... please help?
Post by: tonsured redneck on May 28, 2005, 12:38:48 PM
Hi,
I am constantly changing my mind as to the pick-ups I want. All I know is that they must be bareknuckle.
I have not yet even bought the guitar that I want to use for this new project - because I want to ensure that I get the right guitar for the pickups I want.
I play Mostly Blues and Blues Rock - But I also play a fair ammount of jazz, yet at the same time I will also then play some more aggressive hard rock.
I want to be able to go from a bright twang to a warm driven sound, capable of producing warm silky tones as well as bright, piercing, squealing highs.

I was thinking of a black dog and a bkp91, with a 5 way strat selector switch.
pos1. bridge coil, pos2. humbucker, pos3. humbucker + bkp91, pos4. Bridge Coil + BKP92 and pos5. BKP91.
I am thinking of putting this in a PRS SE with a mahogony body.

What do people think?

Sounds like a good idea to me, P-90 style pickups nearly always sound good in the neck position, and to my ears better than a humbucker, yet have the output to balance well with a humbucker unlike most fender sized single coils.

A Crawler in the bridge would be nice for that warm sound.
I also think it would be a good match for a PRS SE.

I have a PRS EG (first series) with a Crawler and 2 BKP-91's as a calibrated set.  It was at LGS and everyone who tried it loved the sound.  It is a great combination for blues/rock.

I have mine wired on with the BKP 4-pole 5-way switch to give me crawler/screw coil crawler+middle P-91/middle P-91/slug coil crawler+neck P-91/neck p-91.

I would look at the new EG to see if they have a bathtub rout so you can fit any pickup combination, because I love the sounds I get with this.

If you don't want a middle pickup, then still have Tim calibrate the set you get.  The winds on my P-91's are less than you would expect (8.75k/7.9K I think), but they match the Crawler perfectly and can push the amp just how I want it.

Depending on which SE you get, there is also the HB size P-90.  I have one of these in the bridge position on a custom guitar.  I am wiring it up this weekend, but mine is a 'Black Dog' sounding wind, so it should be very fat.

Tim's P-90's are awesome pickups.  If you got the SE with 2 P-90's, you could also look at the Pig-90 for the bridge

I think as there are SO many options in this instance, it'd probably be best to give me a call, 01598 763666, and we can talk through the options carefully to make sure we get it bang on for you.
