Can anyone explain to me in thicky terms what the effects loop output is used for on effects pedals ?
I'm a bit new to this effects pedal lark, I think I sort of have a rough idea but would like someone in the know to clarify for me.
Cheers for any help folks.

The effects loop is an insert between the amplifier's preamp and power amplifier stages. Not every effect should be used through an effects loop, as it could damage your amp.
Generally, it leads to a cleaner sound from the effect, with less noise.
You should wire it this way
EFFECTS SEND > Effect Input > Effect Output > EFFECTS RETURN
