Yes, it's yet another Tell Me What To Buy thread. Here's the story: I've recently landed in some guitar money--about $1000 USD--and I don't have all that much time to go around trying stuff out. So give me ideas, people! I'm after some kind of super Strat, I guess.
I want:
1. An electric guitar with a humbucker in the bridge and probably a humbucker in the neck. I don't care if it has a middle pickup or not.
2. Something with a small neck for my girly hands.
3. Some kinda trem. I'm not decided on whether I want a floyd-style or Fender-style bridge. I have owned both before, but I'm undecided now.
4. I tend to go for bright colours, rather than natural finishes. I want a guitar, not a coffee table.
5. I'd like it to have a glued-in or through-neck, though that's not a definite must.
6. I prefer the Fender or PRS scale to Gibson's shorter one. Again, I'm a little flexible on this.
7. I definitely want it rear-routed with no pickguard.
[/list:u]
So there you go. The things I've considered are a partscaster from Warmoth, but they only have bolt-in necks and I'd like at least one guitar where it's easy for me to reach above the 17th fret. I like some of the shreddy guitars from Ibanez with the set necks, but the necks are wider than I really like. They're ok though. PRS and Gibson are probably out of the question.
Any suggestions?
-
sounds like a custom jobbie - warmoth perhaps? although yu won't be getting a set or thru-neck...
-
nah i wouldnt say it has to be a Warmoth/custom jobbie...
why not like a Jackson or Ernie Ball? (Ernie ball wise im talking JP6 petrucci one... i know nicks got one and LOVES it)....
-
Ibanez RG560 or RG7* with original wizard neck would get my vote.
-
Or the new Jackson Japan series...
-
Used or good deal on EB JP6, build/fit/finish are great and neck is sublime!!!!!!!
other than that, and am not so up on these, but Carvin maybe?
But a JP6 is KILLER!

no WAY nick... Carvin was EXACTLY what i was gonna recommend... not joking thats freaky... i just didnt say it cause i didnt think they produced em any more? only like second hand on ebay and stuff... am i wrong?
-
Carvin ONLY sell direct new (hence good proces, no middle man), thats why ya only see used ones for sale. Gotta go online to their store. Also, they have a NO quible return policy.
-
ahh right cool...
yer ill second them then Mark, ive seen their through-necks on ebay go for dirt-cheap.... ive seen quite a few through-neck, two humbucker, super-strat style ones go for cheap actually....
-
Or this guy;
www.lowelguitars.com
if his strat types are anything like the Custom SG I bought off him, they will be IMMENSE!
has one on Evilbay right now

These two dealers are also well respected for used guitars,

still I am heavily biased to one of these

ok what about THIS:
http://www.tomleemusic.ca/main/guitars.cfm?details=1&id=247&inv=105896
thats the dealer (in canada too- did that deliberately to reduce shipping (which i think is free from there coincidentally))
this is what it looks like:
http://www.theibanezstore.com/oscommerce/images/rgt42dxfmtlf.jpg
seems to meet the requirements? ish?
- through neck
- not natural finish
- trem (i think the edge ii pro is a good one? or is that the 'bad' one? i dunno)
- two humbuckers
only problem is neck profile maybe....
-
Thanks guys! :D I spent about half an hour going through those links! I liked the Ibanez stuff and the Jackson Dinkys.
I'm still seriously considering a Warmoth bitsa just so I can get a neck that's small and vintage-Fendery. I haven't played a JP model guitar lately, but I'll see if I can find one. I think the neck might be more chunky than I like though, but who knows?

How about an ESP Edwards?

Schecter do some very nice guitars with you specs i think.
-
An Ibanez RG1570 or RG2570 sounds like a good fit except it's a bolt on neck. The necks are nice and slim and if you have smaller hands than me, you cannot go wrong there (my hands are large and the necks are a tad too small for me).
Also you can't go wrong with a Carvin DC127. The necks are a bit fatter but still not a large neck by anymeans but you can have one custom built to meet your specs. I bought a used one, all default options and had I paid the new price for it, I still paid very little for the overall quality of the guitar I was getting. Plus it has the lowest action of any guitar I have evr played and I've talked to a few other Carvin owners who said the same thing.

Not a big fan of Ibanez but you tried any with the SA neck have small hands and in my opinion a far nicer neck than the RG's for me
-
Its definatelly more than you wanna spend but I realize theres alot of shredheads arouns here
My mate has one of these

It awsome

The new LAG superstrats look pretty nice, and the review of their PRSalikes in TG recently was favourable. Lotta guitar for the money, and they have a lot of colour options
www.lagguitars.co.uk
Dean vendetta's cheap, has a nice (thru) neck and looks cool in blue quilt, but it's hard tail only.

Now that's a sexy guitar! I love the colour too. Hmm. I think I've narrowed it down to some kinda Ibanez, Jackson, or ESP. Heh. Yeah, not very narrow, I know! Sorry, Nick, but the JP models don't really grab me. But the links you gave are full of other cool guitars I might buy one of.
I've pretty much decided to spend most of my money on a Warmoth partscaster after all and then scrounge up a few hundred more for a shreddy guitar, like the ones in this thread. I just figured that, cool as shred guitars are, I just don't play that sort of music very often. So I'd rather shell out most of my cash for something I'm gonna use more often.
I called Tim and ordered a set of pickups for a HSS Strat configuration, even though I still don't actually have the guitar to put them in yet!

Good for you,

Anyway, probably no use lol.
Just trying to keep my mind off certain situations :)
Hope it provides some eye candy if no help :)

The guitar you're describing sounds just like my Warmoth superstrat, except mine's not rear-routed. If you're looking for vintage fenderish feel but with all the mod-cons (humbuckers, in tune trem, rear routed) then I'd say a Warmoth is definately for you. Bear in mind although they have a bolt-on only policy, they have a sculpted heel option for better fret access.
-
Well, I ended up compromising a bit on what I was exactly after, to save some cash. Ah well, I still get a new guitar out of it, and that's gotta be a good thing! :)
I went for one of these:
When I get it I'll be putting a Nailbomb, Slowhand, and Mother's Milk set in it. It's gonna be my first guitar that is fully BKPed.
-
I think therea great guitar mates got one....got a nice neck an all...you'll have to post some clips..will try an persuad my friend he needs new pickups
-
Yeah a mate of mines got one of those, cant really play it properly as its a lefty so I couldnt really give it a proper go  Looks well built though etc.
-
Going to upset Rg players but prefer the Sa neck to the wizard one....may just be my girlie hands *L*
-
Is the wizard one the really wide one? I played Steves HR Giger (or whatever its called) Ibz last year at music live and I could hardly play it the strings seemed so far apart!
-
Most of the Rg's have the wizard neck...and yeah to me there problematic..the Sa neck is slimmer and more comfortable to me...music live yup think I tried it there as well
