OK, here we go folks - the obvious choice first:
-
And another:
-
Here's the second clip played last week on the original Epi pickups as a comparison:
-
Nice, must post some acdc clips from my crawler loaded SG
-
WooHoo
Whole Lotta Twinfan.
Nice, hope you are satisfied.
Not excatly the tone I was expecting but pc/speakers etc. play big part there
-
LOL,
well I will post Warpig AC/DC clips when they arrive and in my SG then, that'll be a good laff :)
-
Sg's rule
-
The rig is:
Epi '65 SG => Laney GH50L => Marshall 2x12 with V30s => Sony mic => Sony Recording Walkman
The comparison to the standard Epi pup is interesting.
-
well could also do Nailbomb ACDC in my parker, CRawler ACDC in my SG and Emerald ACDC in my guild......hey what can I say I love ACDC, just need more time and less work
-
< is finding this out as cheapest axe owns (Custom SG) is fave right now :)
-
What the sg is your cheapest
-
YEP
-
nice hijack guys
nice twinfan!! +1 on what nick said- definately not what i was expecting... wicked though...
-
Oh yeah sorry twin fan got lost on one
-
No probs guys :D
-
wow angus is a dude...
-
What do you reckon to the Riff Raffs Sambo?
-
schweeeet...
as i mentioned earlier
but yer... very nice..
sounds like two guitars though?
-
Nope - one guitar. No doubling, no effects, nothing. Straight from tape to PC.
-
wow cool
-
So what were you guys expecting then?
-
what I heard the old pup sounded harsh
-
i dunno actually haha... more... typical crunch... but instead its more... unusual crunch... im BAD at describing tone lol
-

Yep - the same basic tone is there (well, ballpark anyway) and I was actually surprised how well the Epi pup sounded. The neck pup (which I didn't record) was pants. The Riff Raff neck is the best neck pup I've ever had in a guitar. No mush, no flabbiness, just nice clear tone.
-
treble?
Busy talking to Sam,sending files etc.
Will re-listen though :)
-

Unusal in a good or bad way???
-
in a neutral way haha.. good i spose...
-
Great tone, all clips have more clarity while having more depth at the same time.If that makes sense?
-
Ok re-listened to Hell.
Sounds a wee bit bright maybe?
But again, pc speakers and all that :)
-
"Hell" is the Epi bridge pup. All settings are the same, pickup heights the same, same strings - everything - as "Hell_BKP". The Epi pup is harsher, more treble focussed and not as clear. It's almost overdriven?
-
sorry, hurried, did listen to Hell BKP.
Dude sounds great, hell, only way to tell for real is in person.
R U Happy?
thats the question.
And Angus is SOOOOOOOOO distinct, this is real hard to ask about tone recorded on pc and listend over net :)
-
not forgeting malcom uses a gretsch for the rhythm parts
-
If I'm honest, the Riff Raff bridge is better than the Epi bridge pup, but not by as much as I was expecting.
The Riff Raff neck is loads better than the Epi neck pup. No muddiness and loads more clarity.
The BKPs seem to project pick attack and the subtleties of your playing better. They capture your playing personality as well as the sound (if that makes sense?)
I'd like to try them out at our next rehearsal with a cranked amp. I think the extra clarity of the Riff Raffs will really shine then. It's not so obvious at living room levels.
-
think BKP's are far nicer on your epi.....same as the Crawlers blew my Gib pickups away
-

I noticed that aswell, the neck one was definately a more noticeable improvement than bridge, but bridge definately more usable than the Epi one. Definately a much better tone through a cranked amp than with Epi pickups though.
-
old ones sounded harsh to me
-
I think becuase the EPi pickups are Alnico V and PAF style they will sound similar. The BKPs are certainly smoother and more open. Can't wait to crank them.
I reckon I need a set of Mules for my LP Std now...
-
The Epi pickups sound harsh and more treblier (in a bad way) than the BKPs. That and the BKs have tons more articulation and (for want of a better word) pickup. Its like listening to two different guitars.
But the BKPs have less treble than I expected - but to me that sounds like an artifact of recording rather than the actual pup - its almost more muted. Could there be a difference in the mic to walkman?
-
The recording level might have been slightly different I guess, but the mic was in pretty much the same place and all the gear used was the same. I'll admit I was expecting more treble from the BKPs too, but I think they're nicely balanced as they are.
-
Nah get the emeralds.....they are really sweat LP pickups
-
Great clips! Really good playing. The Riff Raffs really have the Angus thing going. The growl and brightness is in there. The stock Epi's sounded muddy and way too bassy in comparison. It did sound a bit thin and fizzy but I think that's because of the amp. I alway's found Laney's a bit fizzy and thin.
-
You could never describe my GH50L as fizzy and thin! It's got PLENTY of meat! I'd love to get it recorded "properly".
-
:D Sorry guys for me there`s no comparison. I played one right up against the other at the same time & you can clearly hear the difference. The Riff Raff sounded so so so much better. The scaterwinding helps bring out the treble more. This really helps with the articulation. Nice playing as well, AC/DC are one of my fav bands ever & Powerage is beyond doubt one of the finest H/M H/R albums ever !!
I agree it`s the Neck P/U that you tend to notice sounding way above all the others. But Bridge P/U`s tend to be about gain so this can help cover up a multitude of sins. No conteset for me you`ve made absolutley the right choice. Those Riff Raffs sound F***ing Great !!!!
:D 8)
-
Just listened to the two compared, you can especially hear the difference on the chords that you let ring out at around 30 seconds, the Riff Raffs definately dont sound so harsh here, fuller and more rounded it seems.
-
Sounds cool and good playing too. I'm thinking you might be cliping on the recording levels?
-
Not excatly the tone I was expecting but pc/speakers etc. play big part there
I think that's down to the recording. There's a lot of digital clipping on them, so the recording level was probably a bit hot.
You can definitely tell the difference with the Riff Raff's though, bet it sounds fantastic in the flesh. :D
Muttley
-
Yeah, they do sound better in the flesh. I also had the volume rolled off a bit for my rhythm sound whcih will cut the treble a bit. I'm using 0.047 caps which are a bit too harsh, so I'm going to order some 0.022s from somewhere today. I'll try and get some more recordings done when I've sorted all that out.
-
PC's can do strange things to your sound. Mine makes it sound very compressed. It never seems to record the 'wall of sound' or the 'bite' wich my setup has live.
I didn't mean to offend you, Twinfan, in any way.
-
No offence taken my friend :)
-
That pickup sounded very close to me. Damn I'm a huge AC/DC fan from that era. Considering the gear your using it was remarkably close. The harshness that some talk about is exactly what your looking for when it comes to "Riff Raff". Listen to that tune over and over. It's got an amazingly amount of trebley grit to it that some may refer to as harsh. Thanks for the clip.
