I have a les paul alike mahogany bodied guitar and want to change the p/u's for something that would give a tone similar to josh hommes' kyuss tone. ie really thick middle/bottom end that would push a slightly over driven tube amp. I wasn't sure if emeralds/black dogs/vhII's would do the job, or if I need something with even more output.
thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome,
Out of those I'd go for Emeralds. To be honest though I don't have a great deal of real experience with this particular set, I'm kinda going on what others have said in the past. BTW are we talking Homme's sound on the first album, his sound on Blues... and Sky Valley or the muddier, bassier sound on Circus... ?! I believe he used DiMarzio Distortion Pros (or whatever they're called...anyone?) post-Wretch - so I suppose if you want his sound you should go for his pickup!
-
Great band btw :)
edit: I think the DiMarzio he used is called a Super Distortion. Neck pup of course.
Then all you need is a massive Tubeworks stack (or equivalent!) firing through a bass cabinet or two and some overdrive pedals which I don't think anyone anywhere knows the make of - plus a few thousand acres of desert and a mondo mobile generator  - and you're sorted!

Hey U_P, thanks for all the advice.
The tone I'd really like to nail (the pipe dream for any guitarist) is the sounds from a tune called fatso forgetso (from a split album with qotsa).
A similar sounding tone is from and the circus leaves town, the last track in particular (spaceship landing). About 2 minutes in where it starts to groove and the solo comes in.
The p/u's he used were dimarzio super 2's which are discontinued.

I'd go with Emeralds.....lovely sound in Lp style guitars and can nail the sort of sound your after

The Kyuss tone is from his Ovation GP, which was loaded with DiMarzio Distortions, so maybe a slightly hotter pickup than the Emerald is required. Don't know what pickup he uses with the Maton's.
I'd say consider either Black Dog's or Nailbomb's or even Crawlers. The Emerald's are quite a punchy pickup, but I find them to be quite bright (they're in a light LP type guitar which might explain it).
Check out the Players area, and have a listen to any of the Emerald/Black Dog/Crawler/Nailbomb clips.

or overwound Emeralds like mine...but love the crawlers and the Nailbombs.....

thanks sky and pod,
everything seems to point towards a set of emeralds. I don't want a really chewed up sound {the stomp boxes will do that for me ;)] I don't mind the brightness if the guitar is down tuned it should null any of the really shiney stuff.
Does overwinding make a p/u hotter?
-
As far as I know, yes it does.
Here's a link to Spaceship Landing for anyone who doesn't have it:

EDIT just realised you have to pay to stream stuff of that site
:(
I'll try and upload the mp3 directly again (for the 50th time...).
BTW if it's not legal please tell me!

nope not gonna happen, sorry!

The Rebel Yell should be a good louder option too!

Does overwinding make a p/u hotter?
Yup. There are two ways to make a pickup hotter. Give it more winds, or make the magnet larger. Typically a stronger magnet will have more lows where more winds will be fatter overall, or something like that.

I'd say Crawlers, but I like the concept of the overwound Emerald! 8)
