Title: New amp time.
Post by: badgermark on May 27, 2006, 05:43:32 PM
Right, I need a small, low powered amp for mostly bedroom use, but with the option to maaaybe gig one day. I was thinking of one of the epi valve (gasp! Mark wants a valve amp!) combos, anyone got any experiance with them?

Or how much could I get one for if I part exchange a 80W Peavey bandit combo?

I've tried the Valve Junior, but to be honest I didn't like it. One single volume control and that's it. Not very good tones. When it was cranked it was a bit better, but even then it was very, very loud. Way too loud for a bedroom I would say.

I'm getting a Behringer V-Tone as my next amp. Tried one today and it kicked arse. Maybe I just like solid state tones, but it was warm and cleaned up very well.

Why don't you look for a s/hand Cornford  Hurricane?

I'm a student working part time in Woolworths, I'm not looking to spend over £200 on this, then however much I can get for the Peavey in a trade in.

Anyone know about the Valve Special? Seems decent from GAK.com (http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/options.php?id=68249) though the effects wouldn't be used, I'm a guitar -> Big Muff -> amp kinda guy

Have you thought about a Laney LC15 or LC15R? They're supposedly great amps. The LC15 is around 160 and the LC15R is 200. The LC15R has an effects loop and reverb, the LC15 doesn't have either.

An all valve 15 watter with a 10" speaker.

Now that is something to think about. Thanks. Going away for a few days, so the amp hunt begins on friday! Keep the suggestions coming.

Check out the Vox amps while you're out there.  They have some really nice models for good prices.  The Valvetronix ones are good value and surprisingly nice sounding.

Just back from my local music shop, and picked up a nice second hand vox cambridge 15. Tis not bad, seems to cr@p out a fair bit with the gain anywhere near the 12 o'clock position. Should I be taking it back? Or just accept that the gain goes shitety (like playing a power chord is LOUD! then a second later the volume drops by half) when around 12?

Personally I would take it back, that doesn't sound right to me.

Well its back at the shop, a valve change and a healthy dose of switch cleaner sorted most of the problems, but still borked.

Sounded great before it died. I shall miss its sexy old skool stylings.

I like the Valve Jr. Combo, it sounds good with a good distortion pedal and also an EQ pedal.  Cleans are very good but also benefit from the EQ pedal.

Thats the amp back, and after much tweaking it doesnt sound too shabby. One minute I'm happy with the tone, the next minute I end up tweaking some more.

Thats what I love about acoustic guitars, they just sounds great, no tweakage needed.
