Title: decisions, decisions
Post by: andrew_y on May 29, 2005, 07:16:12 AM
Hello, wondering whether i could get some help on pickup choices!
I was reading through the forum and i noticed a post about someone wanting to get that christopher ammot tone...thats very similar to what im looking for! I can't decide what to get though - miracle man, nail bomb or warpig.
I've listened to the sound clips and they all sound great. I love the organic tone of the nailbomb, but want somethign with a slightly tighter bass response. Perhaps not quite as tight as the mircale man though.
I guess the best way i can describe what i want is a suped up EMG 85. I really like that type of tone...but the 85 is..well...predictable and a bit too standard sounding.
If it helps, my axe is a maple neck thru with mahogany wings, im playing that through a peavey 5150 II.

thanks!

I think perhaps the Warpig will do it for you.  With a Maple Neck thru, the Nailbomb might also give a tighter sound.

I think that the Warpig would do Chris Ammot's tone very well. It has a tighter bass response than the Nailbomb, but not as much as the Miracle Man. The miracle man has a ceramic magnet which gives it the tighter bass, the Nailbomb and warpig both have an Alnico V mag so they have a more organic sound.
What other guitarists do you like the sound of?

oh!! that clears alot up already!
i always thoguht the warpig was just a really extreme version of the miracle man.
I also like that killswitch engage tone...alexi laihos tone from children of bodom but a thicker and tighter bass but not as much as say...godsmack.

hope that elps a little

The Warpig is kind of a mix of both, It uses the same wire as the Miracle man, but the same magnet as the Nailbomb. . Im a big killswitch fan and I know children of bodems work very well, I think that the Warpig is defiantly the pickup for you!

hmmmm warpig it is!
I've actually decided to get a neck pickup now - i'm building a custom Shamray. I hear they're BKP dealers now!
Looking for something realllllllllllllllllllllyyy smooth and real thick like but not muddy, for hte neck position. I want something in contrast with the bite of the warpig. I heard the mule, but thats not what i'm looking for unfortunately.

thanks for your help!

The Crawler is very smooth in the neck position. Check out the soundclip in the product section.

You remind me of myself. Alexi Laihos tone is awesome.

I've been recommended the warpig for my 7 string and i should receive it anytime soon. Once it's installed i'll send you a brief review of it.

I'd love to hear that 7-string with the Warpig, Steve. Tuned down a whole step and then drop tuned. Bet it would bring the house down.
