Title: phase problem with Tele...
Post by: HTH AMPS on May 29, 2005, 05:21:57 PM
I've got a '72 Tele Custom (RI) with an original Tele custom humbucker I managed to find, problem is that it's only got a single conductor and is out of phase with the bridge pickup.

Can I just reverse the hot/cold leads on the bridge pickup to put the phase relationship right? - I seem to remember reading something about the way a Tele bridge pickup is made that will prevent this but I'm gonna ask anyway, CAN IT BE DONE?

It might end up that the only way round this is to flog the bridge pickup and get a new one that is already RW but I'd like to avoid that if possible as the Fender nocaster p/up sounds pretty tasty already.

I think you will have to reverse one of the coils of the humbucker.

Maybe there are other options. There are diagrams etc. at mr gearhead. (Fender's tech site)

I'm not looking to butcher a vintage 'bucker - I know it's as easy as flipping the magnet but I'd really rather leave it untouched.

Tim? - help?

I think the problem is with the grounding plate on the tele pickup.  I think if you remove this you will be able to flip the leads.

Cheers Phil, like I said I'd prefer not to butcher the vintage neck humbucker so if anything needs doing, it's gonna have to be the bridge single coil. I'll have a poke round and see if I can sort it.

Hi HTH, see my detailed email about this-I think there may be a problem with the humbucker as a single coil and humbucker switched on in parallel shouldn't have pahse issues.

Just for anyone else who may read this, Tim has kindly offered to have a look at my Tele pickups if I send them to him - rock on!!!  :D
