OK So I'm sobbing over the overpriced Jap Tele, at least I can drown my sorrows by buying a great compressor.
Is Keeley the ducks nuts or is there another around the same price of equal or better? Whadya reckon...........
-
I have a Keeley Compressor.
Would I pay £185 for it? Probably not, I don't use compressor enough to justify that cost.
However, I did manage to fluke one for £80 on eBay (Buy It Now - it had been listed for 5 minutes...), and I'm happy to have it in my setup. :)

Yes. This one:

Yes, but they seem to be made of unobtanium for Australians. Can anyone recomend a reliable dealer in the US or Europe that ships overseas? Of Keeley or HBE.
-
Barber Tone Press. After this, all other compressors are redundant IMHO.

T.O., you are BANKRUPTING me, STOP IT! with the unsolicited advertising :)

From the US, just order direct from Joel hisself, www.homebrewelectronics.com. In the UK, Music Toyz carries HBE.

Carl Martin pedals are worth checking out, too.

On general principle, they're awesome pedals. Their compressor isn't what I would call transparent, tho.
-
I like my Diamond Compressor (www.diamondpedals.com)
-
I must admit I'm not one for transparent compressors, thats probably why I only ever really got on with the MXR Dynacomp.

Of course! Thanks for that, much apreciated.

I was thinking of getting a Keeley Comp as well but you should consider the Analogman Bi-CompROSSor. I think to get a full sized one there is a backorder but the mini version does the same job + is basically 2 different compressors in 1!
-
I know it's not 'Boo-Teek' but I have a Marshall ED1 Compressor and it does the job just fine :)

+1 for the Analogman Bi-CompROSSor! Don't own one, but I messed with one once, and it does what it says it does (which is shoehorn the sound of the old Ross compressors and Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezers into one box). I'd get the Mini version (if I had the cash, which I don't), as it's slightly cheaper and might not have the wait. You can set it to get silly sustain, all sounding very smooth. 8)

I use the T-rex Comp Nova. Its very sublte and transparent.
It depends if your after a Compressor or a Compressor/Sustainer 'Gra?
If your after country pickin twang or to smooth out your sound stay away from compressor/susstainers like the Boss CS-3 or the like.
I often have to check if my compressor is on during chordal work. It just smoothes out my sound. Just what a compressor should do IMHO.

They are available in Australia and are pretty reasonably priced.
I bought mine in Denmark Street, London... I paid too much, but hey I like the Salesman and he was selling me what I wanted.
I'll never forget what he said to me.
"Hi, Im looking for a compressor. I'm thinking about the CS-3, coz its cheap. Are all compressors similar or is it more a case of you get what you pay for?"
"OOOhhhh maaahn no not the Boss CS-3! Get a compressor not a TONE DESTROYER :!: "
He had the thickest Deep-South-Alabama-Lived-With-A-c--kney-for-too-long accent that made me nearly hand over my cash on the spot just to get him to say it again
I cant remember the name of the shop but They have a Purple and pink kinda sign and thats the colour of the carry bags they hand out.

jp.
Yes it's for the country blues pickin type thing I like to dabble in! (poorly).
-
Yeah I usually stick to strumming... it requires less practice 8)

I'm with 'March' on this one :
The Barber Tonepress is the one.
It can go from clean boost to squishy and all points between. It has a recommended setting in the instruction sheet called "magic dust for single coils" - and it is !
The build quality is exquisite and it's true bypass.
:D

Yes to the Press. I got one recently and I am blown away. I can put it before my zoom amp modeler to P.A. or right after my guitar straight to Tube amp, and it's awesome. If you want to hear some great chicken pickin' thru the Barber Tone press, go to www.musictoyz.com and hear some sound clips. only $140. Cheaper for you guys with your strong Pound to our dollar. Everything Fourth Feline said is spot on. It's real sturdy as well, and keeps batterys for a long time. Check 'em out.
-
Theres also this one
http://www.janglebox.com/ which is apparently modeled after the old Fairchild Valve compressors used in the studios in the 60s.
Though it may not be what you are after, the description on the main page sums up what they where aiming for.
Rob...

there are better compressors than the keeley compressor but they cost £1000's and they are rack mounted, and I reocon the keeley one is as good as a professional rack mount unit costing 10 times the price. It's by far the best sounding compressor stomp box I've heard! I can get a guitar tone even better than David Gilmore's tone in the Pink Floyd album 'wish you were here' if that isn't enough I dont know what is?
-
Id go with the HBE CPR - I have one in plain black - transparent and sustiains nice and proper - and at full pelt you get that country sound that compressors are supposed to do.
-
My favourite is the Barber Tonepress, as you can mix/blend the direct and compressed signal. This gives every thing from a clean boost to a 'squish'.
If you like 'squish' though, I also have used a Boss CS3, but later modded it with the'Indyguitarist.com' mod kit. This gave the controls greater clarity and range. I read from the Telecaster Discussion Forum (TDRI) - that a lot of people use the CS3 straight from the box. Like the Marshall pedal they are very affordable. I paid about £130 for the Barber and the Boss and Marshall are about £50.
Regards,
Derek.
* EDIT * Whoops ! this is a 'semi' double post with financial advice added :D
