I'm not good with making decisions between guitars, but i finally did it, i chose a Dean Z Black Gold over an Ibanez RG1570, some people might say i'm crazy for that but i like the Dean more. I just got a quote from that Singing Chicken site someone posted and they said they could knock it down from £599 to £399!!
I just need to gather up the rest of the money i need which might take a while but not that long.
Dean Z Black Gold
* Mahogany Body and Neck
* Set Neck
* Flame Maple Top
* Rosewood Fretboard
* Pearl Black Inlay
* "Black Gold" 12th Fret Inlay
* Gold Hardware

Nice axe!
Miracle Man set would rule in that fiddle!
-
nice guitar, man. I wouldn't say you're mad taking it over an rg1570- they're two totally different styles of guitar!
:drink:
-
I cant say I like the dean headstocks atall, but the body on that guitar is pretty nice!
-
Hawt guitar, GREAT price. :twisted: i'd go for a cold sweat set in that myself...

I just thought they'd suit the guitar, lol. It's a pretty powerful and modern pickup (much like the guitar), and is described as harnessing "all the drama of thunder and lightning"! C'mon, she's screaming out for cold sweats man. It'd sound HUGE.
-
Haha, i was planing on a Miracle Man in the bridge and a Cold Sweat in the neck!

A fantastic idea! Nicely done brother 8)
-
nice choice, I love Dean Vees :D
I'm on the lookout for an old 80s Dean Vee, must be black though with original vee tailpiece (no Khaler/floyd hack jobs)
:twisted:
-
They have the '79 series.
-
I think he means a proper 80s one. Anyway, good choice, I'm seriously jealous. I'm gonna have to get some pennies together for that vendetta ASAP.
-
Ahh right, they might be hard to find. (the 80's vee)
Which Dean Vendetta is it?
Edit: Ahh i see there is only one.

Then you'll be glad you got the Dean! The miracle man only complements the mahogany/maple body woods.

I really want burnt chrome covers, but i'm not sure if they will go with the guitar, i'm either getting camo or burnt chrome, one of them must go with the guitar, i don't want a plain finish because this is one of the reasons why i like BKP, the finishes are amazing.
I tried to simulate what it would look like, the burnt chrome one doesn't look like it will go in that picture:(
Also the in the camo one i think i put distressed covers there instead of camo lol.

Burnt chrome! It will suit it well I think.
-
All the pictures don't show the burnt chrome well though because of the lighting so i won't know the proper look of it till i get the actual pickup
-
Its tough deciding on colour aint it lol...if the worst came to the worst, you could always send them back an dgte them re-covered
btw..I think burnt chrome looks pretty cool in ur Dean
-
I'd have regular gold covers myself - i'm not sure either of the others would go very well with the gold hardware on the guitar... although if i had to pick - i'd choose a distressed cover... a distressed gold cover?
-
Can you get those?
-
i'm not sure - i'm sure they'd do one for you if you asked for it... this is kind of like what I'm thinking;

-
Yeah that would be cool, but do you have to pay extra, like more than you usually do for a cover?
-
There is an aged gold cover, by special request.

Nice guitar. I'd change it to a stopbar as opposed to a string through, but that is just me. Great find no doubt.
-
I've heard string through gives a better tone.
-
We had a big debate on that, on another board, and wrapping the strings around the stopbar (ala Zakk Wylde) and we came to the conclusion (after an internet brawl of sorts) that it depends on the set-up of the guitar and the style of playing of the player. I like the tone from a stopbar, unwound, but that is just me. I have owned both string through and bridge through as well. *shrugs* Still a great guitar though brother.
-
I play a lot of fast alternate picking metal, i have a non wrapping round stopbar at the moment.
-
Oh, this discusson was weather you lost tone and sustain or not, and it was just that several people had seen Zakk do it (on ZakkWylde.com :roll:) and everyone and their brother had to do it. I was not exactly talking about the wraparound stopbar like on some PRS' and Gibbys. This is a reg. stopbar like on most Gibsons that I am talking about it. I personally lost tone and sustain after wrapping the strings.
-
Hmmm i'm having second thoughts about it! I'm not really a fan of all that gold hardware, but there isn't really another guitar out there for my specs.
-
Do you like vintage worn hardware? Gold wears off quick, and gives a nice worn look after a damn day. :lol: At least it has on an Ovation, a Gibson, and a Strat I had. :lol:
-
Can you give me a pic of what you mean?
-
Let me look. The pic may be huge here. I can never post a pic here or at a boar dog site for them being damn huge. I'll send you a pm. 1 sec to find and send it to you.
-
Check your pms Brother. :wink:
-
Yeah thats better, but i think chrome would look better on that guitar, but i can't really do anything about that.
-
Yeah. The "Z" bridge/string through would be hard to find maybe, but the rest could probally be retro fitted if you want to go that route. You can always remove the "Z" and sand/buff it to remove the gold plate that is on it as well.
-
Ok, i think i've changed my mind, perhaps it's because i've been watching Metallica play on ESP's all night, but i want an ESP, well not a proper one, i mean an LTD, but the question is do i get the LTD EX-260 or do i save up and get the LTD EX-400.
The only differences are, the EX-260 is made from Agathis not Mahogany like the EX-400, and the 400 has proper EMG's but i don't care for them since they would get changed anyway, also the 400 has grover tuners, but i could change the tuners on the 260 if they were really that bad.
The EX-400 is about £599 whereas i can get the 260 for £449 so there is a big price difference considering the similar specs. It depends on how much the BKP's will change the sound.
-
Go with the 400. You can't beat a good mahogany body Brother. Since the BKP are not sterile as a mule like the EMG junk is, the BKP should do that mahogany justice no doubt. I would go with an alnico with it personally, but a ceramic would make it scream as well. I still like the Dean better though.
Oh yeah. Put the EMGs on eBay and some jackass will buy them no doubt, especially here in the states where Zakk is God. :roll:
-
lol will do, i hope i can find a good deal on a 400 otherwise i will have to wait for ages till i can get it.
-
The ESP will cost you substantially more than the Dean, yet isn't really that much better. Indeed, the intrinsic tone of the Z will be MUCH fatter due to the greater amount of wood behind the bridge, and looks WAY classier. Also remember that if you change from EMGs to passive pickups then you will have to replace all of the electrics (pots, jack etc).
I'd say that the Dean black gold Z with a set of BKPs is a better guitar than the off the peg ESP, and it'll cost you less. I mean it's less than the 260, yet has mahogony body and neck, maple top and inlays.

*applauds*
I agree with Sifu here myself. Changing all the pots and the like is a pain money and time wise. Plus the extra wood is better hands down on the Dean for tone. :wink:
-
Ok so the Dean may be back on the cards, it's just that gold hardware, too much of it for my liking, though i think i could get used to it.
-
The whole point of it is that it contrasts nicely with the black :roll:
I think it's a really classy look, and looks killer on a darkened stage.
-
You'll get used to it, and it will be your "pimp" guitar. :lol:
Seriously. I hated the gold plated shite on my LP, but I got used to it after it wore off in ares and the like. It now looks well played and well worn. Even after awhile you can replace the hardware with chrome/nickel from several places, and sand/buff down the Z bridge with some steel wool or hig grit count sandpaper. I'd still go with the Dean.
-
Yeah i think i will go for the Dean, imo it would look better with chrome hardware, but the pickups are the majority of the gold, and they will get changed, maybe to aged gold pickups.
-
Never worry about gold plating on your hardware. It's unlikely to last six months. As I said in another htread, send me the hardware for three weeks. I'll leave it lying round my lab for that time, and it'll come back beautifully aged.
-

The problem with LTD is evryone knows its the cheap(er) ESP, so you'll always know it's not quite the real thing, but a Dean's a Dean, even if it's not handmade in the US.
Since the BKP are not sterile as a mule like the EMG junk is
Are we allowed to say "sterile as a Mule"? :wink:
-
Yeah the i'm getting the Dean now, just need the money lol
-
Wow i didn't notice before, but i just saw that the headstock is flamed maple too! I like that a lot.
